My boyfriend is threatening to dump me because of me getting medical guardianship. Is that reasonable?

I am legally competent. My parents are thinking I am not by getting me medical guardianship. What should I do in this situation? I don’t want anyone thinking he’s a predator for dating me. Should I get an attorney?
Not saying you're not, saying how it could be determined under the law. Definitely get an attorney.

Do you live independently? If not, where do you live?

Do you work?

I am withholding judgement for now. Sorry if you already mentioned it - I just scanned the thread.

How long have you been with your boyfriend? How often do you see him? How did you meet him? You said you're 29, how old is he?

Again, I apologize if you said any of this already. thx

Trying to get a better feel of the situation. If you were to have said you were "dating" a guy online that you had never met who lived in Africa I would have a different answer than if you were dating a local guy who lives near you.

I guess I'm not clear on why your parents think they need to have medical guardianship. The three biggest reasons I can think of would be 1. an adult who has become mentally incapacitated; 2. A minor child whose parents have died; or 3. An adult that has limited capacity in some areas.

Either way though, what do you want to do? Do you want them to have medical guardianship? If not, I don't see how they could legally. I mean, even when I was living with my folks I still had 100% capacity over my own health care.

If they are your legal guardians though, you might have to have a doctor define you as capable of making your own medical decisions. I would think it's similar to when someone is under a guardianship but they want their own independence. I don't know exactly how it works - I'm sure each state is different.

No I definitely don’t want to have medical guardianship because I am definitely capable of making my healthcare decisions. It’s sad that’s it’s come to this situation. I am definitely not mentally incapacitated clearly. So I don’t understand why they are doing this? Doesn’t make sense!

So I went back and read some more. Found that you said this: It was because I was impulsive in the past and wanted to “protect me.”

What does that mean? How were you impulsive, what happened and when?

Yeah my parents found out I was having sex with lots of men online casually and they wanted to “protect” me from that which is dumb in my opinion.

Oh ... well, if you were to have gotten pregnant who would be financially responsible for any offspring? It would be them.

If they have medical guardianship then they can have you placed on birth control to prevent an unplanned pregnancy.

I think I see the issue here.

If you get an attorney, he or she can fully explain what control that would give them, and how permanent that would be. And the attorney would need to explain why it wouldn't benefit you legally, this needs to be explored. Then you could make an informed decision as to what you need to do. And if you need an attorney to pursue blocking that action and filing paper work with the court. It's better to sit down, discuss fully why they feel the need to pursue this, and tell the attorney.

I can see your boyfriend's point if relationship becomes stronger he wants say in starting family. I agree with prior comment attorney could limit control as boyfriends opinion matters, as they say he has skin in the game.

Yeah well I am already on birth control and I’m not allowed to take it out just yet which I am upset about. I hope they aren’t controlling me. We could both support the baby but I am not financially ready yet.
