There's an entire genre devoted to this: DSBM, or depressive suicidal black metal. There are plenty of great DSBM bands out there, like Happy Days and Thy Light, but I must warn you that they're not for people who don't like harsh vocals. You kind of have to be pretty deep into metal to truly appreciate it. Here's TotalSelfHatred, from Finland.

Here's some lighter fare. Still metal, and still sad:

And regardless of who you are, or what music you like, if you've ever seen Futurama this song will have you bawling.

Like decades and decades of suffering smashing your brain.
Tears can't help falling off my eyes every time I listen to it:

No disrespect to Joy Div & fans, but she nails this song.

I don't know who did the original, maybe Peter Frampton, but this is quite good.

;)

This one always made me sad. Not so much the music as the time...when someone special left me. This song always reminded me of that loss.

These I listened to quite a bit when I was [a little bit] younger, often when I was sad or lonely.

There are some covers I do legitimately think rival the originals [some best the originals even].

I speak almost no Dog, but I can see that this dachshund recognizes
the sadness of another dog. His face expresses so much
sensitivity and intelligence. That is what I see and hear, watching
this video.

Dogs, and many other animals, have more feeling then most people realize. :)

The captain
By Kasey Chambers

Well I don't have as many friends because
I'm not as pretty as I was
I've kicked myself at times because I've lied
So I will have to learn to stand my ground
I'll tell 'em I won't be around
I'll move on over to your town and hide

And you be the Captain
And I'll be no-one
And you can carry me away if you want to
And you can lay low
Just like your father and if
I tread upon your feet you just say so
'Cos you're The Captain, I am no-one,
I tend to feel as though I owe one to you

Well I have handed all my efforts in
I searched here for my second wind
Is there somewhere here to let me in I asked
So I slammed the doors they slammed at me
I found the place I'm meant to be
I figured out my destiny at last

Did I forget to thank you for the ride
I hadn't tried I tend to runaway and hide
