Why does society view autistic people as mentally incompetent?

Do they even call the intellectually gifted or even profoundly gifted autistic people the r word?
If you are intellectually gifted autistic person in Serbia, you will make sure that no one knows that you're autistic. And many ASD people dont even know they're ASD.
But no, here being smart is in no way connected to being a gifted ASD person. Smart and autistic doesn't go in the same sentence.

What do they call people who are notably odd, yet intellectually brilliant in multiple subjects?

Exactly the same in my country sadly, to the point that teenagers or ignorant people also calls themselves "autistic" when doing stupid stuff.

Yeah yeah same here. Like "wow I'm autistically into this game" or "yesterday I read a book for 6h like an autist."

I have heard autism used as an insult whilst online gaming, a long time ago.

"Woah, what the hell, are you autistic or something? Effin r-tard...." That sort of thing.

It is a cruel world.

People also use the phrase "are you disabled, or something?" - when somebody does something weird or stupid. That is another one, maybe less specific than the autistic jibe.

Some autistic people actually use autism as an insult, too. I knew an obviously undiagnosed autistic who seemed to be in denial about his autism, a long time ago and he said "have you seen them and how they speak" - in reference to autistic people and said "they look like mongy's" (mongy = r-tard).

reminds me of a black autistic special needs guy i'm in contact with, i can't help but feel sorry for him, besides autism, him being born premature as a baby no doubt contributed to his cognitive/mental/social difficulties.

I havent been told by my partner that I am braindead, inept, slow, lazy, slothful, stunted and "emotionally retarded." These things are very hurtful so, I can imagine what other people are called beyond the confines of this experience, likely worse or around the same area.

Everytime I have an autistic outburst in my relationship and get called these things, I wonder if society is right after all, I am seemingly driving the person that was suppose to love me into a state of resentment and it is over very small things like poor tonal delivery or being seen as bratty.

I think overtime, a neurotypical or non autistic person might grow tired or fatigued of their partner and I might be convinced that this is the depressing reality of it all.
