What was the last movie you watched?

Oh, you're talking about the animated Earthsea? Cool! I wasn't aware it had been released in the US (apparently, they weren't allowed to show it here for X amount of time because of the Sci Fi Channel miniseries). I've been wanting to see it because it was directed by Hayao Miyazaki's son and I'm curious how he compares to his father. Or were you talking about Howl's Moving Castle?

I just recently watched Curse of the Golden Flower and House of Flying Daggers. Zhang Yimou may be favorite director, I've never seen such graphical poetry and splendor in moving images. Just wow.

Have you seen the John Woo movie Red Cliff? It's not quite as "pretty" as either of those, but still great, possibly one of the few real movie epics to be made in a long time.

The theme music almost sounds like it's from a Final Fantasy game or something (I mean that as a compliment).

On a side note, typical movie trailers are... incredibly bad. I don't know why so many people find them enticing!

Earthsea, though we did mention Howl's Moving Castle as an example of a film that is rather different from its source material.

Anyway, I watched Alice last night, and oh my gosh, it was wonderful. Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter were amazing as the Hatter and Queen of Hearts. And I giggled when I heard Alan Rickman as Absalon, the Blue Caterpillar, and Stephen Fry as the Cheshire Cat! I was so happy to see Anne Hathaway as the White Queen and Crispin Glover as the Knave, too.

There is a shorter version, but I would really recommend watching the whole 2-part, 5 hour long version. That sounds painfully long, but those 5 hours or so will zip by once you get into it (and it's easy to split into two sittings).

Did some research and came to the same conclusion. I'm really surprised this is a John Woo epic, seems like getting out of Hollywood (albeit temporarily) was a very good move for him

Forget about his (mostly) fairly lame Hollywood output (although I still have a bit of a soft spot for the gloriously cheesy Face/Off), Red Cliff is miles away from any of that.

"Tron Legacy" good acting, but idiotic plot compared to the great TRON cult movie. An impotent homeless looking Jeff Bridges. After you watch this movie, throw it away & forget it. Excellent modern propaganda...Get the 1st TRON movie-outdated tech but way better.

Forgot the title-a documentary about Peru's "Shining Path" movement. Peruvian politics 1980-2003. Holy sacred lamb! Describes the overzealous nature of those who gain total power. And the innocents who die. Poor indigenous Peruvians wage war against Lima, blow up cars, kill police etc. The Peruvian President reacts, takes total power, disolves Congress, eventually decapitates & stops the Shining Path movement...then corrupt, wages war against innocent Peruvians...killing many in the process.

"O Brother, Where Art Thou?" comedy for the holidays! The music is first rate, the acting is outstanding

"Napoleon Dynamite" nerd comedy, make sure you vote for Pedro...

Ditto. I'm a big fan of the original film and I would've been the first one to criticize if they blew it, but they didn't. Personally, I think the coolest special effect in the film is the one that no one ever mentions- Jeff Bridges looking 30 years younger in the flashbacks. How did they do that?

Went to see "Catching Fire" on Wednesday morning. IMAX, first showing for the day. Love those morning shows. The parking lot was nearly empty, the theater was about half-full. It was a weekday, even better a middle-of-the-week day in spite of being a school holiday. Nobody wants to get up early. (Works for grocery shopping, too.) When we came out of the theater (my mid-teen Grandson and I) the parking lot was jammed full of cars.

"Catching Fire" was a whole lot better than "Hunger Games." This director, maybe helped by having seen the results and opinions of the way the first movie of the series was done, made the filming and the screenplay go smoothly and very clearly. Color on the screen was really good. I had tried to re-read the book but it depresses me so much that I only had a good start. I did recognize that the early film action was following the book very closely and most or all of the dialog was taken straight from the book. I would expect that the rest of the film was also very close to the book. Acting was very good. Everything was believeable. When "Hunger Games" was over, I was happy for it to stop and give us a break. "Catching Fire" upset me because the story and the flow of action was going so smoothly and so well I wanted it to just keep on until the whole story of all the books was completed.

Those effects were great, but they were the only problems I had with the film.

Loved the music! The lead actor is from Friday Night Lights & I like him. The actress is SEXY! Jeff Bridges is one of my favorite actors. I’m a fan of TRON the cult classic. Over the course of 3 days I watched Tron Legacy so I never really got into the plot. I missed the Blue lights in TRON 1.

The Hollywood clich? of a father leaving his son got to me. I would never leave my son.

If you never watched TRON check it out. It’s very outdated tech & you can skip the first few chapters. Jeff Bridges does a better, more spectacular acting job. The lighting, plot, action etc is imo better.

Last movie I watched was a Spanish movie called Blancanieves, which is a weird and dark (and refreshingly un-Disney!) retelling of Snow White set in 1920s Spain and done in the style of a silent film of that era. It's available on Netflix Instant.

RENT. I know I know I am such a big RENTHead but I can't help it. Its a great show with a good message and its my favorite show on the planet. I just find it so inspirational.

Gravity in 3D...absolutely breathtaking and executed so well. I've seen a lot of space films in my time but none have made me feel like I'm actually in space like this one. Unforgettable and unmissable.

I'm sure it's great and I do want to see it, but I seriously doubt it's better than Wreck It Ralph. I don't think they'll top that one for a loooooooong time.
