What song are you listening to right now?

This band is notable for the ammount of modern bands/genres that cite them as an significant influence, including punk, garage, and grunge which originated in the same area as The Sonics. Fairly short-lived in the early/mid 60's it was one of many bands that disappeared when members joined or were drafted to go fight the Vietnam War.

Pretty Baby, sung by Billy Murray, recorded 1916

I don't know what to think about the lyrics.
"Oh, I want a lovin' baby, and it might as well be you..."
It might as well?
Was that sort of reference edgy, at the time? The seeming spontaneity?

What was up with the inclusive familial angle?
"And I'd like to be your sister, brother, dad and mother too..."

The rest is easy enough to understand, but the 'might as well' and
the engulfing omni-relationship points, I am not clear on.

It has been sung as a mainstream song about a boy & a girl, but
apparently one of the coauthors had his boyfriend in mind at the time.
