Public Announcement about what autism is and is not

Fredan

Member
Public Announcement. (My personal opinion)

Autism does not equal LGBTQ, or other identities, or any other such garbage.

Autism is a singular diagnosis, and nothing else.

It is possible for people to have other conditions or identities as well, aside from just autism, but those are not directly related. Even in the Autistic world, the vast majority of people are normal ("cis" and straight).

I am not saying there is anything inherently wrong if someone is LGBTQ but, from what I have seen there has been a concerted effort from further left folk, social justice warriors, and woke people to meld all "marginalized groups" together into one, which ends up in us autistic people being made to look like a laughing stock as well as as just generally misrepresenting us.

Sincerely, a normal autistic person.

I feel like you are mistaken when you say there has been a "concerted effort from further left folk, social justice warriors, and woke people to meld all "marginalized groups" together into one,"

Nobody on the left has been trying to do that. That sounds like talking points from the far right trying to demonize and distort views from the left. It's anecdotal evidence but in my 40+ years on earth I've never heard or seen the "left" try to "Meld marginalized groups together into one". The marginalizing and trivializing of the other, is exactly what the left is against.

It used to be that way, when I used to be on the left, but I left the left, because I saw the writing on the wall. It went from "your identity shouldn't matter" to "your identity matters intensely and we will treat you differently based on it".

You have to realize the modern present day left, is not the left of yesteryear.

It could also be a phenomenon that the "normal" autistic people are not very loud, but the more political, ideological, "marginalized" groups tend to be the loudest in this scenario, so it could just be an issue of certain types of people being overrepresented.

However, my point more generally is that if you've met one autistic person, you've met one autistic person.

It makes sense for marginalized groups to form coalitions.

What is good for one marginalized groups tends to benefit the others - things such as understanding, compassion, acceptance of differences, and legal protections.

All members of all groups are not the same. But they can still form groups that act together for the mutual benefit of each member.

I think in this case, it is doing harm in the social realm, a realm where we as autistics already struggle.

When I speak to NT's of more like mind to myself, I feel a need to make it clear, that yes, I may be autistic, but I am not some SJW woke scold that is going to melt down on you, for making a politically incorrect or "offensive" joke. That is the impression a lot of people now have about autistic people, thanks to the woke sjw's co-opting and melding themselves with autistics and autism in general.

I do not find this to be true in my own experiences.

However, it may be true in yours.

I can't say I have ever noticed this being a problem. My main issue is that people think I'm like Rain Man, but I've never been confused with Elton John (I'd love for his bank to confuse me with him).

I've just never met anyone in person who identified autism relative to identity politics of any kind.

Actually the most prevalent response I have heard is pretty par for the course here. To admit little to no knowledge of autism at all, and that they don't know anyone who is autistic. Then comes anticipated comments usually reflecting indifference, without any sense of contrition at all.

How people misconstrue us politically is of little concern to me compared to the numbers of those who are utterly indifferent to us based largely on the disparity between the neurodiverse and neurotypical population.

Simply put, when a social majority thinks for better or worse of any minority, our ranks are so much smaller compared to others that we are simply "lost in translation".

I've never been a believer in left or right. a blend makes more sense.

At least we are a significant minority hard to ignore, influential, well beyond our numbers.
