So we have a child that clearly is on the autism spectrum and need help!!!

So we called 40-50 Autism related doctors in the area begging for help. Many are all so willing to help.

But Ohh you dont have a diagnosis?? sorry we cant help you.

Searching Doctors that provide a Diagnosis/Assesment:
Sorry we don't handle children under 5
Sorry we dont take insurance..
sorry we dont take United health care insurance.
Even ones that United Healthcare recommended wont do it.
Such hypocrites...

We found 1 $1000 =to get a diagnosis Money we dont have..

our next step.
I got to call United healthcare and have them search areas over 100 miles away

For over a year now this is where we are at..

Almost forgot.
Possibly found one finally. (the one that wants $1000) They nee a referral. Called doctor for a Referral. Its been over a year. We need to make an appointment to see the doctor so we can tell him what we told him a year ago. Because our insurance wont cover it if the original visit was over a year old.

I am so disappointed in the " help provided for Autism"

FYI: East Central Florida"

Perhaps you can get in contact with others in the area who have autistic children and perhaps they would have some advice.

That's awful. I know I'd be really frustrated if I was in your situation. I don't live in Florida but I think there's a good chance there's a law requiring insurance companies to cover an evaluation for autism. Pediatricians who are part of your insurance network should know a few doctors in your network that can diagnose autism.

While you're waiting for appointments, I recommend focusing on your child's emotional needs since many autistic children feel alone and have difficulty understanding their emotions which can greatly contribute to social difficulties and behavioral problems. Children whose parents demonstrate they are attuned to their emotional needs by noticing, identifying, and validating their emotions and responding in a way that helps them feel understood and respected will feel closer to their parents and have less emotional problems. A better mood and a better relationship with you will make therapy for autism much easier since your child will be more willing and eager to cooperate.

Even if you understand emotions well, it may still be helpful to read more about it since it will help you understand your child better. There are plenty of books and webpages about attuned parenting and validating emotions that can be very helpful.

Also, how old is your child?
If he is still in school, the school can test him for special education services (gifted/delayed/autism).
It would be free to you and likely admissible for other services and the aforementioned childhood SSI.

When a medical system runs on up front government grants to the tune of multi billions, well, say good bye to any accountability.

I live in germany, so I don´t know how it is in other states, but I never went to an autism related doctor, because there are so less here and it is harder to get an appointment there. I had a therapy with a normal psychologist (normal behavior therapy like by an depression etc.), which helped me a lot. from that point on I worked on my own (social skills, skills in workaday life).

maybe a normal psychologist could be as good or better (and easier to get).

waiting time for autism related therapy was about more than a year. waiting time for a normal therapy was about no waiting time.

but some normal psychologist don´t know anything about autism or got wrong knowledge, but not all.

my experience was that a psychologist don´t have to be an autism specialist to be a good therapist (even for autists too).

maybe you should not restrict yourself when thinking (I am an autist, so only an autism specialist could help me). but thats only my experience with that.

@Shaddock, that approach does not work very well over here, but we have organizations that can recommend autism-competent therapists.
(The other kind keep trying to "cure" us of our autism... :()

ok I understand that germany isn´t USA and vice versa : D

in germany any studied psychotherapist can diagnose autism or doctors which specialized in psychotherapy. there is no need for any autism related study to give a diagnosis. (as long as I know).

afterwards you can go to an authority and say "hey, I a have autism diagnosis, please acknowledge this by giving me a so called "disability pass" (is for all other disabilitys too).

with that pass you can go to every employer for example and because of laws your autism has to be respected.

the pass is essential for everything. for many official applications and assistence.

even if it won´t help the thread originator, I would be interested in getting into knowledge how the situation is in the US. could you explain this a bit more (if you want)?

how is the situation for an autist in the US.? is there a "disability pass" too? can only autism related doctors give you a diagnosis?

germany is not perfect, nothing is perfect and there are many things which feel unfair (for example, there is a govermantal assistence for people who cant work, but the money these people get is too less, so they survive somehow but live in poverty and the calculations for the payment is wrong. social unions say that the payment has to be 150-200 Euro (€) more to protect the poverty line of each individual). goverment knows that, but so far does nothing. thats not fair. that sucks. people are ****ed because of being disabled they cant work and they can do nothing for that.

living in poverty in such a rich country like germany (rich as ****) is just a shame. putting money everywhere like its nothing but when it comes to social things they say "oh sry we are germany, we don´t have any money, we are the poorest country of the world!"

but in most other countries they get a **** (nothing) or less, so in germany you are also ****ed, but a little bit less ****ed than in some other countries.

  1. If someone is disabled enough, they can get a [pension].
  2. Employers are not, legally, supposed to discriminate against people with handicaps or disabilities, but they often find underhanded ways to do just that.
  3. Therapists who are not autism-competent, more often, only think of ASD2 or 3 as being "real" autism and are incompetent, even with them.

what is ASD1, ASD2 and ASD3? saw this on another thread. (searching don´t helped me)

thought ASD means autism spectrum disease. are there more than 1 autism?

I know asperger, atypical autism and kanner autism. but now everything is called "autism spectrum disease", but maybe I am wrong.

ASD = Autism Spectrum Disorder (under DSM-5)
1-3 are severity levels (1 = least, 3 = most).
(Effectively, severity level is a grade on co-morbid conditions.)

I only know/use ICD-10 : D (also diagnoses here are in ICD-10) ICD-10 is the 10th revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD), a medical classification list by the World Health Organization (WHO).

ICD-10 is outdated. ICD-11 was released in 2018. The new criteria are more similar to DSM-5 that was released in 2013.

World Health Organisation updates classification of autism in the ICD-11 – Autism Europe

"The ICD-11 officially came into effect on 1 January 2022.[10] However, the WHO acknowledged in 2018 that "not many countries are likely to adapt that quickly".[11] Currently, no country has officially switched to the ICD-11 yet. In the United States, a group that advises the Secretary of Health and Human Services has given an expected implementation year of 2025, but if a clinical modification is determined to be needed (similar to the ICD-10-CM), ICD-11 implementation might not begin until 2027."

but I don´t mind, I only copy what wikipedia says : D
