Anyone like the movie Matilda?

It's the 1996 version with Mara Wilson, I used to watch it a lot when I was a kid... not fully understanding the messages until I watched it again as an adult on Netflix, LOL.
 
I have seen it several times and considering I was 50 the year it came out, well....

I have a fondness for anything associated with Roald Dahl. If you haven't seen the Musical version, it is closer to the darkness of Dahl's original and the witty songs from Tim Minchin are a delight, but then I have been a lifelong fan of Broadway musicals, good bad or indifferent, and have seen a few on Broadway. I have seen this 2022 version several times as well and quite enjoyed the performances of the entire cast (you can also find it on Netflix).
 
I was only 6 when it came out but I didn't see it until I was about 9 or 10 when my brother got it on video. The videotape was red!

I think it's one of those movies that almost everyone likes.

During the filming, the mother of Mara Wilson (Matilda actress) was dying of breast cancer.

The couple who played her awful parents, Danny Divito and Rhea Pearlman, adopted the young actress, Mara Wilson, as their goddaughter.

They even went to the hospital a short while before Mara's mother's death, and Mara, her mom, and the DiVito couple all watched Matilda together.

During Mara's mother's cancer battle, and after her death, the DiVitos took care of little Mara at their house quite often, and even took her on family vacations and road trips. They supported her all throughout her childhood.

They're good people. I respect them highly for this, and whenever I see them on a movie or TV, I get a little teary thinking about that. It's a big thing. Love in action.

Oh, I read about that before, very sad indeed.

I do believe Mara actually lost passion for acting after her mother died, not sure if that is true.

Danny Devito and Rhea Perlman are definitely amazing people, Devito is such a funny guy.

My favorite character from Matilda would probably be Miss Honey, I never had a teacher like that from what I recall, the actress who played her made her first directorial movie recently.

Matilda is definitely in my top 10 favorite movies of all time!
 
The only thing is that as a child I kinda felt disturbed about the movie by the references to being a "special child". Miss Honey was kind and motherly and took Matilda under her wing and then adopted her at the end and there was like a montage of them doing everything together. I began to fear that a teacher might do that to me because I was the "special child" at school and I would cringe thinking about it (as most kids would when thinking of being coddled by their teacher).

But that isn't a bad reflection on the movie though, as it's a very good movie with a happy ending, and as an adult I can put it into context and enjoy it.
 
I love that movie. My favorite bit of trivia is that Roald Dahl's wife, Felicity, was nicknamed Liccy. She was a produce for Matilda.

In the movie, Miss Honey refers to her favorite doll as "Liccy doll". The subtitles spell it, "Liccy Dahl".
 
I also love that Danny Devito plays a mean, uncaring character, but he narrates the movie with such a loving, tender voice. It's such a difference that I don't think I noticed that Danny Devito was the narrator the first time I watched it. It shows off Devito's range.
