The Best Decision of My Life

I am beginning to think that going back to school may possibly be the best decision of my life. Not because of the degree. As the Wizard of Oz said to the Scarecrow, "there are people walking around who are no smarter than you, the only difference between them and you is that they have a piece of paper and you don't." So I am basically getting the piece of paper that tells the world that I have a brain and can think.

No, the most valuable thing I am getting out of this experience is not a degree but I am seeing a counselor in what they call the Student Success Center. I wish that this had been available to me 40 years ago when I was just out of high school. It would have made a great deal of difference. They are really pushing the Student Success Center because they feel it is being underutilized.

On my first day of class I met someone from the SSC who had an information booth set up in the Student Commons area. He invited me to take a test called the Gallup Strengths Test. Now I took that test a few years ago at work but they really didn't do any follow-through, just told you what your five strengths were and left it at that. Not so at school. Once you have taken the test then they put you through a program to help you work with your strengths. And there are different areas to focus on as well. One of the areas I plan to work with and improve is relationships.

So if you are in school and your school has something like the Student Success Center I invite you to get to know these people because they can really make a difference.
