You Know You’re Autistic When…

...when you can't hug or handshake without feeling like your skin is boiling off or peeling off. And clammy hands are the worst.

...when it really helps you as an adult when your counselor says, "You are not bad, you just did something bad." Guess what?! That means I am not lazy or a brat or a big ol baby.

...when velvet is hot, water is slimy, cotton burns, snow makes your fingers feel like they are falling off, plastic feels like static electricity, sand feels squishy, clay gets out your aggression, glass feels loud and smooth, metal vibrates like music, and wood feels alive and actually bites.

...when the same sound, clothes, color, or texture can suddenly change from fine to annoying like the frig humming.

...when you rock yourself, shush yourself or hum to yourself in an effort to self-soothe much like a mother to your inner child.

...when you either lack awareness of your surroundings like living in a bubble or are hyperaware of your surroundings until you have a panic attack or pass out.

...when you either shut down and lose track of time or are hyper-aware of time and act like the bunny in Alice in Wonderland rushing around and being hours early to everything.
