French pastry is typically thought of as layers separated by butter. Eggs are used for custards which may be in encased in the pastry. The croissant is a perfect example of this. The croissant l had the chance to try when a proper French bakery opened 15 mins away from me. They also served perfect coffee in a fancy cup.

There are traditional french donuts, called beignets, not all that sweet and quite delicious.

You can sprinkle on as much powdered sugar as you want to sweeten them up. Now I'm missing the famous Cafe Dumond in New Orleans with its famous beignets and chicory coffee for breakfast.
