(Video) what is high functioning autism?

Regarding treatments she stated, "...a lot of those comobid conditions I talked about before can be addressed in therapy with a licensed mental health professional and this could also include seeing a psychiatrist if medication is something that can benefit you or your child", mind altering drugs don't benefit anyone apart from the corrupt pharmaceutical companies who are already making $Billions from other people's misery, doctors and psychiatrists who have an easy fob off when there's limited resources and people who want to turn autistic people into doped up zombies so they're easy to manage, this quote is the only part of the video I hate because they're damaging to people in the long term while being addictive even if they appear to help at first. Apart from this it's not a bad video.

Yes but, bi-polar, anxiety, OCD, and depression are co-morbidites of Autism and often need help. I hate big Pharma too, but what do you suggest? Working with severely impacted people with all sorts of issues, I have seen prescription medications save lives, make people lead normal lives, NOT be “zombies”, stay out of the hospital or psyche ward of nursing homes; not be homeless; or stay out of jail. Few psyche meds are “addicting.” Some do have bad side effects, and some cause “damage” like diabetes, or tardive dyskinesia. Still, ask these people which they choose...medication or no medication, and all say their lives are better now.

I strongly disagree, most are very addictive, often both psychologically and physically despite the blatant lies stating that they're not habit forming in the instructions, if they're not habit forming then why do people have to come of them gradually to avoid adverse effects? Also I have seen my brother is on the very low functioning end of the spectrum be made like a zombie first hand, he was not himself at all and was barely reacting to stimulus around him, he was doped up to the eyeballs and the so called "experts" were incredibly saying how much better and calmer he was, oh yes he was much easier to handle, luckily my parents went against medical advice and took him off them when he returned back to himself a while later. They pressured a 2nd time, that time it put him in hospital with liver failure, he was literally yellow and entirely due to the tablets they gave him, yes, it was very life threatening and it would have been in my opinion manslaughter if he'd died, but luckily he recovered once the drug was fully out of his system, I wanted my parents to sue, but stupidly they accepted a written apology. I have experienced them too, a now banned antidepressant that drove me nuts and was severely detrimental in numerous ways, I will never recover from it fully because of what it did and it's the same drug that caused a man killed his family while on them and he was acquitted, I can relate to this being on them and it was right to acquit him, also the same drug has been connected to numerous suicides, so don't tell me they do good, but of course even heroin does good in the short term, it really does reduce anxiety and you feel really calm, they used to prescribe numerous illegal drugs in the past too. You might see improvements in the short term, but they will pay in the long term with interest. Mind altering drugs are not a way to help people and I will condemn any video that promotes it in any way what-so-ever.

I only wish you could the dozens upon dozens of people I worked with who are now living happpier normal lives w/o schizophrenia, suicidal ideation, extreme rage, and so much more. They feel differently. What you experienced is what you alone experienced and it sounds like some inexperienced or uncaring doctors. What works for you will not necessarily work for another person. Also, medications are all different and they do different things. It can take years to get the right combination of treatments. Some people absolutely need medications.

Btw, most doctors are not prescribing “zombie drugs” anymore. Unless your brother tried to hurt himself, or another person, OR it’s a poorly run institution where all patients are kept sedated for ease of management.

I ask you what are your suggestions for schizophrenia, extreme mania , suicidal tendancies, or life threatening OCD? Have you any solutions for short or long term for managing some illnesses which have a biological component?

My brother bites his finger and sometimes hits his head during meltdowns, but it's controllable and literally putting him into a zombie like state is not a solution, it's totally unfair and is in my opinion abuse. Both my low functioning autistic brothers are still cared for by my now elderly parents and I dread what will happen to them when my parents are gone, but I will do my best to prevent such abuse in my limited capacity assuming I'm still around (I'm not exactly healthy).

I cannot talk about schizophrenia properly because my belief is classed as religious and is not in the right section, I will get around to starting a thread, but I think a lot of people could be misdiagnosed. Drugs only block symptoms temporarily of severe mental illnesses if you are lucky and resolve absolutely nothing, the body becomes tolerant and addicted, then they have to either up the dose to stop the symptoms returning which they can't keep doing or risk changing to another drug which is difficult because of withdrawal, plus there's an increasing risk of side effects and in the long term it's a similar slippery slope to illegal narcotics, although usually a slower progression. If the person needs to be institutionalised for their own safety they should be treated without mind altering drugs because it makes matters even worse in the long term, but the institutions in most countries are far from places of recovery, even if a happy and 100% sane person was locked up in one for a while they'd come out messed up in the head because even though I've never been locked up in one, I've seen one and heard 1st hand experiences from a few people since throughout my life they seem to think that autistic people should be housed with mental health patients, so how is it going to help people with severe mental illnesses? The institutions need to be nice pleasant places where people actually can enjoy staying at, that is the first step. Most mental illnesses have underlying reasons for the issues that need to be addressed, many are from the past and there are various therapies that can help.

Many mental illness are genetically based. Some are trauma based of course. I desparately want to know what other treatments you would engage people who have severe paranoia, hallucinations, wash their hands 1000 times a day until they bleed, etc. There are those with severe violent tendancies. Nothing works!

No one is forcing the clients I have seen in the past 4 years to take medications. They all adamantly want to keep living normal lives. They (ave been able to life safe, and happy lives for decades in end...so no, the effect is not “temporary.” I DO agree that the pharmaceutical industry can be really bad, but they also do great good also.

Would you not take an aspirin if you had a headache? Would you not accept novacaine when going to the dentist? What about antibiotics for an infection? It’s all the same thing. We all take those unless one is of Christian Science faith, which denies all forms of medicine. There have been court cases where parents of that faith denied their children getting life saving medicines. I am not sure why you connected schizophrenia with religion. This is very strange to me. Genetic disorders have nothing to do with religion. In the old days, they would burn people at the stake for being “different,” and they called that religion!

I think we will never agree? By the way, I once was an addict myself. Then I studied to become a drug counselor, and a mental health specialist. I have worked in multiple mental health agencies, as well as in a prison. I know a thing or two! :)

Medications have helped millions of people around the world. Therapy as in “talk therapy” cannot do everything. We only see/ hear of the bad cases where people have been over medicated, or experienced severe side effects. But objectively, they do a lot of good too. I hope you can learn more about this topic scientifically. If not, then we will disagree.

It irritated me that she kept saying "Autism spectrum disorders". It's not plural.
Actually, this can be used in the plural - 'autism spectrum disorder' is an umbrella term for many conditions which are are also known as 'autism spectrum disorders' (and she does explain this in her video).

Wrong: 'I have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders'.
Correct: 'autism spectrum disorders such as Asperger's and PDD-NOS'.
