Problem with payment for Uber

No one is forcing, but this model is becoming more and more the norm that everyone will have to follow in a not so distant future; "independant" workers actually depending on a big compagny that changes the rules of their relationship however they want for their profits.

The more we allow this to even exist the more place it will take in our society until it will eat all it can...

I sound leftist ( i am definitly not) but this is realy something that bothers me.

Twitch and youtube is a similar model yet, the popularity of those websites started with people using it not for money, so , this is a more complicated situation.

In the majority of cases, Uber tends to be cheaper in fare prices than standard Taxi firms IMO, except at "Peak" times where they hike the prices to nearly 3 times as much, is that even legal?

@tree in most cases Your does equal you're, it's the annoying way some people write your when they mean you're.

If you search online you'll find in some cases they've raised the prices as much as ten times as a legitimate practice of their "surge pricing" program. As well, the futility of complaining by email to Uber.

It's been a controversial practice of Uber for more than three years. Despite apparent attempts of select plaintiffs to wage lawsuits against them for this very reason, it also appears that there has been no legal resolve of the issue in favor of any plaintiffs. But then this is what can happen when "the little guy" goes up in civil court systems against a $72 billion dollar publicly-traded corporation. The kind of civil action they can keep bottled up in court for a very long time.

Though there are various articles online on "how to avoid Uber surge pricing". I'm guessing if there is a court that can eventually somehow stop this practice, it's probably within the realm of the EU courts. Not Britain, Australia or the United States.

All you can really do is to be acutely aware of when surge pricing applies to your fare in real time just before you enter the vehicle. And that when you order a fare online you are also agreeing to any number of contractual stipulations as opposed to just hailing a cab.

And perhaps worst of all, note that there are any number of global articles citing that Uber drivers collude with one another to enhance surge pricing. Here's one:

How Uber drivers may be ganging up to trigger surge pricing

In the meantime I'm apt to think it all amounts to a form of racketeering. Just say "no" to Uber. Or risk facing their $urge pricing when you least expect it.

Meh, there's a big difference between the odd typo and having the spelling and grammar ability of a dyslexic 5 year old, as some people on the Internet do.

As it happens I just edited the link in my signature to correct the typo.

Here's some music to all those Uber drivers out there who dream of getting rich on surge pricing. :p

Ironically, the majority of Uber drivers here in Sheffield are black or Asian.

And no, I don't have a problem with that.

Meh,just pointing out the obvious...

Well on this internet most of the time you see errors because you dont interract with native english speakers , I think ! To be honest i am sure that my english is horrible , it has been years that I stopped practicing english on a regular basis xD

That reminds me that during my IQ test, i couldnt help but correct the person that was giving me the test , because she had a bad prononciation of certain words ( not a french native speaker^^)

I'm just grateful when going in and out of airports to use only airport vans. Most operate on a flat-fee basis, where you're not even expected to tip the driver.

Something I learned a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. My first business trip to Philadelphia in the 80s. Went from the airport in South Philly to Center City...cost me a small fortune by cab.

Of course airplane travel being what it is in the post-911 era, I also just say "no" to flying. ;)

That's not good.

At least now I know not to use Uber during "Peak" hours.

Yep, use your phone to check those Uber maps for dark red areas just seconds before you step into that car! Otherwise you'll be in the red when it comes to the jacked-up cost of the fare.

But personally I find this all so underhanded that I wonder if drivers will attempt to change the rate multipliers while the fare is actually in progress?

Though if you come to Las Vegas, don't be surprised if you're a victim of "long-hauling". Where even a short distance cab fare gets stretched beyond all reason.

Here's a song dedicated to everyone taking a cab in Las Vegas:

I highly doubt I'll ever make it to Vegas mate, I can't afford to visit Casinos in this Country!

Maybe some of them are actually dyslexic.
I'm Mildy-Moderately dyslexic I can have good days and then i can also have worse days with it

It's irritating that people like Rich can't understand something so bloody simple, then again he never will cause no will has the guts to tell him straight on here and he looks down on people who have trouble with grammar and spelling

It's quite disturbing reading this on a forum where the majority of the members have a 'neuro difference' and pull people up on something that could also be due to the very same.

In my workplace this would be construed as disability discrimination and relevant action would be taken.

It's disheartening to read that you're experiencing less tolerance on here about something that is, in the UK, defined as a disability under the Equality Act 2010.

That's really sad to hear that members have been run off, for sure im not going to run off,
I actually started not caring it's way off topic but the OP started it off so he can't complain

@Rich Allen , are you still interested in your original question? I gave a suggestion at post #11.

I couldn't "get out" of paying the increased fare, but Dad transferred some money to my account to cover it.

Like I said to @Judge last week, at least now I know not to use Uber during "Peak" hours (so not after 5 PM GMT).
