My Obsession(s)

I'm absolutely amazed that this thread is from 2010. What a beautiful piece of history, I think I'll make my mark.

I'm obsessed with the Lord of the Rings trilogy and those adorable little hobbits right now. Must protect Pipin at all cost. Chickens, especially the easter eggers with the froofy cheeks. And big frog.

My obsessions, although I prefer to call those as areas of special interest have changed a bit during the years, but include:

- space (still somewhat relevant)
- possible extra terrestial life (still somewhat relevant)
- conspiracy theories (mostly about UFO/ET’s, still somewhat relevant)
- neurology and neurochemistry (still relevant)
- psychology -> how the human mind works, especially evolution psychology (still relevant)
- 3D modeling (not anymore relevant)
- science & technology (in general, still relevant)
- electronic music production (still a little relevant)
- nutrition and excercise (not relevant anymore)

My lifelong obsessions are animals and nature, specifically horses (Lusitanos and Classical Dressage) and Native flora (in the various areas I have lived in) but I have and continue to be very focussed on ecology, marine flora and fauna, herpetology, raptors, climate change, Australian geological history, sustainability. I also love the period of Europe from 1750-60 to 1820, I love Late 18th Century costumes in particular the Redinote and mens costumes. I have also loved Flamenco (Music and dance). Mental Health is also something I like learning about both from the Psychological perspective and the Shamanistic perspective. I am deeply and personally fascinated with the "Wild Mind" and how that is a potential and largely unconscious connection to all life around us, I love the connections we see this concept connect with in buddhism, shamanism and other native spiritualities, astrophysics and the Aspie mind and some who experience altered states of consciousness.

Would you have some good summary to link from this?

I guess my special interest's has changed over the yrs, when sports was big then retired and reading became big especially the 2nd w.w but always had a interest in it.

Personality typology is one of my biggest obsessions. I feel a great sense of connection, when I read about a personality type to which I relate. It means a lot, to me, to know which communities grant me the greatest feeling of solidarity. I update my Signature, whenever I discover a better combination of personality types that describe me.

I spent much of my life feeling different, as many fellow auties do. Personality communities have helped me find people who relate hugely to me. They save me from loneliness! My girlfriend, boyfriend, and I even met, through personality communities. :)

My first obsession was athletics, not running, but athletics, specifically middle distance races, I could read about trainings, strategies, shoes' specifications, etc; back then I was formidably training 6-7 times per week, racing almost at a national level. But then I became 21 and the age category took me to the senior level, where all the champions run. Unable to reach the top of a regional level I just drop it.

My last obsession is Cambodia. I lived there last year, I learned their language, eat raw mangoes, and bananas, papaya salad with more than 10 chilis, never refused anything. I got extremelly interested in the Khmer rouge genocide from the 1974 to 1979 in Cambodia, read most of the books and testimonials about the genocide and visited almost every museum.

I like to play General Manager in sports video games then watch as the Cpu plays against itself. This is my go to relaxing thing.

I also study the bible this is definitely therapeutic for me.
I belong to a bible study men's group that helps me a lot still have my problems but still read about the 2nd ww have also been incontinent for a long time wife is my big supporter helps to control things.

Otherwise, I feel that I have lost a lot of interests. I was so bright as a child and my teens, so curious about so many things, and now I am like a shadow of myself in that regard.

Sounds like me but my "like a shadow of myself" seems to be a response to the shutdowns. I think perhaps I had never been bored longer than it took to run a queue but I am crazy, outta my skull bored.

I need curiosity about something to be ignited.

How long has it been for you, Apleba?

Covid ignited my curiosity, wow is it interesting so far my hypothesis is refusing to be falsified. every day another data point.

My obsessions/special interests are:
Video games - from the early 90s through mid-2000s I was all about subscribing to as many gaming magazines as I could (I had every issue of GamePro Magazine from 1994 until 2006 but when I moved in 2014 it was too much of a hassle to take them along). I'd read them all cover to cover (even reviews/previews of games I didn't particularly care about) because I was the dude my family and friends would come to ask about any new games coming out. Now they all pretty much make their own decisions but that's alright because over the years my obsession mostly shifted specifically to Nintendo while a lot of my family went over to the Xbox side. I try to buy Nintendo consoles on day one whereas with Sony and Xbox I wait a year or two.

Pro wrestling - been a fan for as long as I can remember. My mom, dad, uncle and grandma were fans too (well, my uncle and grandma stopped watching around 1997-ish when it became like watching an episode of Jerry Springer). Of those people only my dad is still alive but I don't talk to him to know if he still watches. These days I still enjoy watching, but a lot of it is just WWE/NXT but I'm just as interested in what is happening behind the scenes as I am with what happens in the ring.

Marilyn Manson - Been a fan since 1996, I saw the music video of his cover version for Sweet Dreams and thought it was weird, just another shock rocker looking for attention...but later that evening I couldn't get the guitar riff out of my head, so I went and bought the CD it was on. Eventually started buying posters, t-shirts, would get dirty looks in public for wearing them or comments from teachers when I'd wear them to school, but none of it phased me. I started looking up every interview I could find and I saw how well spoken, funny and intelligent the guy is and I just became very interested not just in his music and art, but the whole persona. I give kudos to my mom for helping me get those first few CDs and t-shirts despite some of the more religious people in our family absolutely hating the guy. Since some of my older siblings were into Kiss, Black Sabbath and Alice Cooper, she viewed Manson as my generation's version of them, so she didn't have a problem with me listening to him. And my mom actually liked a lot of his cover songs (but she didn't care too much for his original music). I have four tattoos and all are related to him. I know he's not exactly a popular guy (especially with these allegations made against him earlier this year) but I'll be a fan for life.

I don't know if it's specific enough to count as an obsession, or even an interest, but I really like reading languages I don't know or only partially understand.

My special interests are(things I do every day):
-Reading(learning), primarily non-fiction. For awhile, I read one book a day, My favorite topics are: psychology, self-development, philosophy, anthropology, quantum physics, and medical research.
-Art, every medium. For awhile, I made a piece a day.
-Gardening, working in the garden/yard/park. I find it very satisfying and relaxing.

Currently my Doctor Who obsession is flaring up, lol. I've got all the Classic series DVD's and Big Finish Audios. I'm currently making my way back through all the DVD's, but with info text on, and plan another run through with commentary on. Currently towards the end of the Jon Pertwee era so still got quite a lot of DVD's to get through.
