Figuring out this Aspie thing

Jain Doe

New Member
Hi there. I am the mom of three HFA/Aspie boys. I just started back to school, and while I got a 4.0, I had the worst semester possible. I am on a waitlist to get diagnosed so that I can get accommodations. I live out in the country, and I have very few people that I talk to. One of the books I read said that online friendships might help, so I wound up here.

My goal is to have an Alpaca ranch and get my degree in Animal Science. My three boys are 16 and 9 (twins). I guess that I have passed for normal for so long, that going back into a large setting with lots of people freaked me out. I think there is nothing worse than having studied Autism to be a good parent, then get into a situation where you are hand flapping, and you don't realize it till they stare at you. Just one of those 'oh crap' moments that makes a light bulb go off.

Hi Jain Doe I think you already cracked the hardest bit, in figuring out what you'd like to do coz then it's just working towards that goal & best of luck with it, a ranch sounds great. There are 3 alpacas in a neighboring field near here...11 months gestation span, apparently. They remind me of camels for some reason. Something to do with the stance.

It was when I got back into education in my 30's, that my ASD & associated stuff got diagnosed: I couldn't note take, I scrawled anything & everything & couldn't decipher my writing afterwards & I had a really difficult time organizing my work & writing although my intellect was ok, I got one of the four available scholarship prizes in my entrance year.

I hope you can get some practical support with what you need to continue with your dream. :)

Elemental Thank you. Alpacas have a lot of things in common with camels - they do both spit and it smells horrible. But, alpacas grow some of the softest fiber. Best socks and sweaters you can wear.

Hi & Welcome.
Autism has a hereditary link, so its definately possible. Sure you want to take care of large animals in addition to kids. I know nothing about it, but have you tried it in an experimental form, like worked on someone else's ranch or at a clinic, etc?

Tom, I have worked in an animal lab before. I did go out and visit other ranches to see the animals and learn about them. I learned to trim toenails and watch teeth. I've even helped with shearing. I try to make the most of the extra credit opportunities in school, as well. I was able to line up my goats and sort sheep. I even learned how to make pigs move. My Animal Nutrition instructor said we're going to actually look at digestive tracts during this session. Believe me, I am in the right spot. It is that moment when you can breathe. Class is stressful, but the more I reintegrate into society, I know it will dull down a bit. I will also work on managing what I need to, instead of trying to do too much. Typical over achiever.
