Darkness

Me too. I always became more "alive" at night. Even as a kid, my mom would comment that I was like a cat. If past lives are real, I HAD to have been a jaguar or something in my last one. Before I found the right medication (which took years to find BTW), I could never fall asleep at night. I just couldn't get tired. My dad would just scream at me, "Well then. GET tired!" as if it was something I had control over. I could go for weeks without sleep physically, but it probably did take a toll on me somehow. I was always getting colds/flus and having meltdowns at the drop of a hat.

Even when I did manage to fall asleep, it was only for an hour. Two if I was lucky. I got the deepest sleep when I would nap during the day. I never could truly enjoy a "sunny day" because it hurt my eyes. Overcast and rainy days suit me better. The cold never really bothered me either. I could literally go out in sub-zero temperatures and start sweating. In the summertime, I often got sick from heat-induced illness.

When one of my nephews was being born, my parents had to leave me home to take care of the pets. Like I really wanted to go two states away just to wait around in a hospital waiting room for hours. It was the middle of January and snow covered the ground. It was impossible to go outside and take care of the goat and rabbits because the sun would reflect off the snow and make it impossible to see anyway. I waited until night to take care of them...it was awesome.

I can do both, but I am definitely a night owl, unless I'm sick I can't even try to go to bed before midnight, my average bedtime is about 11:30 PM and I have to get up for work at 5:30 AM, I know I should get more sleep I just don't feel tired before 11! And it has been 8 years of this job...

I will take my dose of sunshine though at the same time, on days off, weekend, vacations, I will usually get up around 8 in the morning, although I'm not very alert, need coffee!

I do have trouble with extreme heat, a few years ago I lived for three years in southern Ontario, the summer heat... There were times I almost couldn't handle it, they can keep it! Although a hot day on the prairies of Saskatchewan can be equally as bad, where I live in Calgary we average about three days per year of above 30 Celcius, which is about right for me, although this past summer we had at least 10 days above 30, and I wasn't liking it much... Now we are heading into a Christmas/New Year's cold snap, almost two weeks of daytime averages of -15... Yuck!

I am more awake and at peace at night.
I've always tried to find work that started late evening into the night.
Love to sleep late and sometimes most of the day.
But, I do like my fair share of sunshine too.
I like the feel of it on my skin.
It just gets too hot to do much outside in the summer here in Florida though. Any type of exercise or outdoor work.

But night is when I feel more awake and lively.
I wish stores were open all night as I would probably do all shopping at night.
It's just more relaxing at night. I go to bed when a lot of people are getting up. 4 am usually.
So sleep a lot through the day when I can.

This may sound strange but does anyone else out there do better with darkness than light? I am finding the shorter days easier to deal with. I like the cold nights very much and my new job keeps me out of doors at night. It's peaceful ....
I am always miserable in the summer.

I prefer darkness to light, but it’s more that I’d rather be in a basement. Me and my siblings would play together downstairs, and after we got a Nintendo that’s where I spent most of my time.

As an adult, I basically have a “basement apartment” in my home. My wife has fibromyalgia, and I snore and moan in my sleep which makes her more painful and irritable during the day so I’ve slept downstairs for about 9 months, and our marriage is stronger because of it.

I’m also fairly sensitive to temperature changes and get cold or overheat easily so I commonly dress in layers in winter so I can quickly adjust. It doesn’t help that at work they have the thermostat set at 65.

It might be a nostalgia thing, or simply that I equate basements with fun, but it’s definitely a “safe space” for me.

I don't like flourescent lighting. It's too bright and unnatural.
I'm enjoying the quiet cloudy days, and I especially enjoy rainy nights.

I need my bedroom to be completely dark at night. The tiniest bit of light can keep me awake! I also like winter more than summer, because people keep to the indoors and there is lovely snow, and I can wear soft, snuggly things. I also am not comfortable in heat, and dislike the glare of intense sunshine and having to sweat a lot and the bugs that fly right in your face.
