Common expressions

I've never liked people referring to their spouse/partners as 'my other half'. One and one make two! You are a whole person!
Some married people consider themselves a team and one spouse is half of the team.

If two people really are in love, it means each has extended their definition of "self" to include the other. Especially true if they've been together a long time. (I do that to a lesser degree with a beloved pet.) If the other is "lost," it is like you've had part of you torn away. So yeah, it makes perfect sense for those people.
