I'm one of those people who absorb accents -usually in a very short space of time. ( Embarrassing when talking to the German CEO, or worse, as a child, when the teacher had a lisp. ) A decade or so ago I was travelling around the UK for acouple of weeks and was stopped in London by someone trying to get people to donate to the local hospital fund. She didn't believe I was Australian. I rang some family on return, and they thought I was one of the Scottish relatives.

I have heard it's common among autistics - some sort of echolalia or something.
I was told when younger that I sounded a bit British, possibly due to growing up with the Goodies, Dr Who, Catweazle, monty python, fawlty towers etc. etc. American accents always sounded weird and grating to me - so Sesame street etc had no effect.
