Blunt Force Bureaucracy

Here?s an interesting question about an issue I ran into recently.

?How much should you invest to get yourself straightened out??

By straightening out I clearly mean; seek therapy, seek counseling, get educated, etc.

Perhaps it?s a totally different matter in other parts of the world, and maybe it was a different deal in other times (say 20+ years ago). But since I?m dealing with it now, it raised a question.
Also, take in consideration that everything has a price tag now, and some price tags are really way, way beyond most people?s price range. When governments aren?t touching it with a stick because they tell you ?we?re running low funds? it bewilders me how it can be expected that people pay for it themselves.

The price tag, along with income, is becoming a weird catch 22 nowadays. If you need to see a professional that charges you between 10 and 20% of your monthly income as an hourly wage just to get yourself sorted out it?s worrysome. Some people do, if they pay rent, taxes, insurance, not have 20% of their monthly income left. And that?s not just talking about low income if you?re receiving benefits of sorts. I remember when I had a job, the extra money I earned more because I had a job, I spent on getting to and from my job thus in the end I had the same amount of money left. Oh wait; I was in therapy because of my job. Net worth of a job; less than I have now.

If I have to choose between food and therapy; the choice is easily made. Even more if a therapist at some point will claim that my lifestyle is unhealthy and unstable, thus my lifestyle is detrimental for therapy and treatment. Many health problems come from bad diets and insuffient intake of nutrional minerals and vitamins. And the easiest would probably be ?how grumpy and outright depressed will you be if you haven?t eaten for a day??.

Recently I read a report about people seeking out healthcare in this country. People apparently, because of the high threshold they have to pay themselves before they get services, will not seek out services. Even better; some people have stopped paying mandatory healthcare because they can?t afford it. But it?s mandatory. So what happens is that they will be charged monthly, and after 6 months, they?ll get a fine because they didn?t pay their bills. That to me makes no sense. It?s like taking legal action and turning it into a blunt force object.

So clearly, the people?s voice is that seeking out support with a ?high? price tag will get people to be unhealthier and keep on trudging with their issues until it?s too late. Recently I read a report where a group of therapists all across the country confirmed an already climbing number of suicides because of people not receiving help. I've blogged on this last week already or so. But anyway; Next year cutbacks on healthcare will be more severe and they predicted this number will be even bigger. And while I could argue those therapists should drop their rates, I guess their rates are for a reason partially. My last therapist who ran his own practice had to rent a place (or perhaps he bought it even), yet that?s not for free, like in most places of the world. Add those prices to their hourly rate and go from there.

So going back to the start cause I?m going on a big tangent here.

How much should you invest? Maybe I should rephrase the question ?how much could you invest??. Since that?s an equally big part.

Here?s an interesting assessment;

About 18 months ago I was at that same social security office talking with a job coach. And she told me that my social security checks are actually what the government sees as the bare minimum to get by. Those checks are fine to pay rent, insurance and put some food on the table. If you?re handy and creative with your income you can buy some clothes and shoes, but that?s about all there is. In my personal situation it came along that I actually needed to move out and live on my own, to where she told me ?well, social security is not money to put in a savings account for things like that?. And in a way she was right. But if that money is not for those expenses, and just for a bare living allowance, then how is that same amount (which is marginally more/less than anyone else receiving these checks) in my case spent on therapy and coaching which the government will not fund? All while others receive the same money and just come by in a similar fashion.
It?s not really about not wanting to spend it, it?s more about ?I don?t have that kind of money?.

And obviously they?re turning it into a blunt force object here ?If you don?t seek out help, we will revoke your social security?. That?s bureaucracy at its finest.

Or as the title stated; blunt force bureaucracy.
