I wanted to share this sooner, but thought I would wait to see what happened before sharing and even now, not conclusive, but certainly interesting enough to share.

So, it all started when someone posted something from youtube, onto my wall and it was a dr Gibbins ( I think is his name) talking about sugar. Well he just blew me away with his animation and knowledge and what he said about sugar, was so fascinating ie that we NEED sugar because it is fuel for our body; the problem is sugar in foods that we buy ie consuming too much.

Anyway, that is not the reason for this thread, but ACID. I was curious to see what he has to say about GERD and such like and well, he just left me dazed and I am experimenting and so far, so good.

I have no choice, but take a strong acid tablet every day, otherwise, I would end up in hospital due to not being able to eat or drink because of the acid. I should be operated on, but they refuse and very kindly was told I have one of the worst digestion problems they have encountered so far ( this is in France), so of course, I ask myself: if that is so, how come this tablet works then? Once again, sorry I digress!

What we are told by our drs is that we excrete too much stomach acids and thus, at all costs, must be reduced and so, we are given anti acid tablets which stops acid all together, but get this? The opposite applies: we don't HAVE ENOUGH ACID in our stomachs.

He goes on to describe that we need about 90 minerals and vitamins a day for a healthy digestion and says, if one element is missing, it acts like a domino effect. He also described it as a row of dancers, all dancing in sequence, but one goes out of line, it is confusion and that is like our stomach! He went on to say that when one is missing, another hormone comes along ( is there already, but produces more and more) - can't quite remember the name. Anyway, it is this hormone that opens up the door, from our stomach, to our pipe that goes to our throat and voila acid issues.

So, what is the element that we need to close that door? Can you believe it is SALT? He says: stop taking all the meds for acid and start adding salt to your foods. So with great fear that is what I have been doing and goodness me, I have not taken my meds today and I am not suffering at all! I do have it on standby though.

And contrary to what drs say, salt is apparently not bad for you!

Yes! It really is all about balance, isn't it? I really hope the salt at the right amount is exactly what helps ease things for you Suzanne! :)

Ah, good old acid reflux, yeah the sodium helps so, yes salt (or baking soda if you get a bit of a burn, or even a few soda crackers.) Doctors don't know everything and, this one or that one can be wrong. Some under medicate, some over medicate, some get it right. Everyone is different, so you have to find what works for you.

Fun fact: starting to drink Gatorade (which is full of salt) jumpstarted Stage 2 of my weight loss. (82 pounds since early 2005!) I have no idea how that worked.

All dietary experts say salt is necessary. They say TOO MUCH of it is bad for you. But our pop-diet-culture takes ideas and runs with them-distorts, exaggerates, tells part of the truth, not all of it...If dietary experts say that we need the right amount of salt, pop-diet-culture says: run away from evil salt!!!
Similar to what Dr Gibbons said about sugar: it's good. We just have to have the correct amount.

There is a lot of individual differences also.
You don't have enough acid in your stomachs-maybe there are other persons for whom the opposite applies.
Maybe you haven't gotten enough salt. (Some other persons get more than they need, or may have medical conditions that make excess amounts especially bad in their individual cases).

Apparently, according to dr Gibbons, it is not possible to have too much acid in the stomach, unless due to some unnatural forces ie meds or something. Our stomach needs Gastrin and chlorine and to create the right amount of acid juice. So when an element is missing, more Gastrin comes in to try and build up the acid content, which causes the "door" to open and thus, heart burn.

I am "guilty" of not using a lot of salt and perhaps it is a mental block of: too much is too bad! But I now am rectifying that and am trying to not go too the other way lol

I wouldn't say: good old acid reflux! But I do get what you mean ( me taking you literal). I think this dr has it right actually, because he went into detail about it all and wow made it all seem so easy to understand.

As it happens, I did need to take my med last night, for as soon as I got in bed, whoa heartburn started. But am going to continue doing the salt, because something is working and as I mentioned before, apparently, I have one of the worst acid cases so far ( well in France anyway).
