The Baby Animals Thread

No photos, but this was quite an evening for baby animals.

First, a fawn ran past me on the access road.

New calves in the field by the mailbox.

Best of all: teensy-tiny baby quail ran as fast as their teensy-tiny legs could take them from one side of the road to the other. They were so small I couldn't see them over the short grass. Just the waving tops of the grass as they went by. There were well over a dozen of them. Accompanied by a couple of adults.

After I watched them pass and got ready to move forward again, the teesiest baby of all came stumbling across the road. He was going much more slowly than the others which by now were maybe six or more feet ahead of them. I knew he would never catch up and would probably become part of the food chain.

I walked up to him and picked him up. He was smaller than a small chicken egg. He was terrified.

Then a wonderful thing happened. By picking him up, the adults twigged that a baby was in danger and they started fussy around, doing the broken wing thing around me. Now that the parents knew he was there, I could set him down and they would made sure he caught up. He was so much littler and slower, he'll still probably end up feeding a predator. It was still magical to get caught up in the drama.

Not my photo, but you can't believe how little these guys are:

Me holding Louis when he was a couple of months old. I certainly can’t pick him up like that today.
