Runs in the Family

Hi, I'm 35 and my 5 year old boy has been flagged for Aspergers testing by a couple of health professionals. So I started reading up on the subject and took an online Autism Quotient AQ Test, which firmly put me at the far end of the spectrum. Reading more about people's experiences here a lot of my life makes sense in an aspie context - especially social interaction.

I am mainly interested in finding out how to support my son through this - but anything I can pick up to improve my own life post-self-diagnosis will be a bonus.

For the rest, I am a software engineer and artist running a games studio and a digital sculpture program. I find I can be quite productive working on my own - but miss working alongside other people too. At the moment I feel very unsociable, throughout my life I usually had one good friend at a time but now don't have any that share my interests.

I guess I'll be lurking and catching up with things on the forum for a while - just wanted to say hi first :)

Hi Iggie. Welcome to AspiesCentral.

Like you I like working with others towards shared goals. I'm not good at socialising outside of work either - I prefer to just spend time with my family.

Hello Iggie, and welcome to Aspies Central. I am very sure you will find lots of great insight through this forum (in the two months I've been a member, I have come to appreciate Asperger syndrome in a valuable new light).

I got an official diagnosis recently, and even got a few follow up sessions to learn more about the diagnosis.

It makes so much sense of my life that I am losing interest in trying to be normal, and just enjoying focussing on my aspie interests instead. Of course this is at odds with keeping pace with my relatively normal wife.

Welcome Iggie :)

You've come to the right place. Feel free to look around, share stories, and ask questions; everyone's quite helpful and supportive here. We've also got a great recommended resources section, for books on AS:

I must say; software engineer and artist; that's impressive. If you don't mind me asking, what software do you use for your sculpting? I'm currently learning to use 3Ds Max. Would be cool to know which studio you work with, but I understand if you'd prefer not to share (for privacy reasons).

I noticed you haven't posted in over a year. So . . . welcome back. :)

I use Curvy 3D for fun drawing and sculpting characters. I've used Modo for low-poly modelling. More recently I've used Blender for modelling and animation (great now I've got the FBX format loading into my game engine).

re: Not posting for a year - I felt a bit bogus with my "self-diagnosis", and now feel more comfortable with a clinical label. In the mean time my son has also just finished formal diagnosis with his main 'symptoms' as being exceptionally clever, and a bit social backward - a trade-off I am happy with.

Ooh, I've heard of the other two, but never Curvy 3D. Will have to look in to that :)

Hello & welcome , I'm sure you will do an excellent job of helping your son to negotiate the aspects of his condition especially with the insights you yourself have picked up over the years
