Dead at the age of ninety. He had quite a career having played everyone from Satan to Christ and even an exorcist.

Though for me the role I will most recall was in his ability to portray an overwrought Protestant minister, one of many who contributed to the destruction of Polynesian peoples in the Hawaiian Islands, in the 1966 film "Hawaii".

He always seemed like the Energizer Rabbit to me, or maybe The Picture of Dorian Gray, just going and going... He caught my eye early on when I saw him as the Knight playing Death in The Seventh Seal as a kid, but his role in the Exorcist is probably my favorite. I think I saw him last in one of the recent Star Wars films.

He was also quite effective as the villain in various films like "Minority Report" and "Three Days of the Condor".

Didn't he have a role in Star Wars? :o

I wonder if it's odd that I feel more emotions towards driving past road kill than I ever have reading about any celebrity death - even one's who's work I was keen on.

To really compare the two you would have to drive past road kill celebrities.

And he was Ming the Merciless in Flash Gordon, the voice of Vigo in Ghostbusters II. He was in Dreamscape, Never Say Never Again, Ice Pirates, Strange Brew, Conan the Barbarian, and Footloose.

That man was everywhere!

He was Oscar-nominated for Pelle the Conqueror, and I fail to see why he did not win that. His performance there was legendary.

I also loved him in The Virgin Spring.

It's ironic that the Covid-19 outbreak has escalated to a pandemic so soon after Max von Sydow's passing. We could do with an Antonius Block-type character right now! Interestingly, Sweden has not (as yet) gone into lockdown, even though all its neighbouring countries have done. Maybe someone, somewhere, is playing chess with the grim reaper. Jag tänker, att vi borde informeras...
