During an episode of Who Wants to be a Millionaire while Chris Tarrant was host, he said 'my boy knows every flag, strange boy'. Why does knowing every flag make someone strange? I don't understand.

I think it's just an off the cuff comment to remark on someone's knowledge. Nothing bad meant by it. I've often been called strange for my specific knowledge and I take it like a badge of honor.

People with unusual knowledge rattle that type of person's (the host) ego. So they often try to reassert their higher status by belittling the knowledgable one and/or invalidating the knowledge.

From a young age my brother could recite the Kings and Queens of England and the tears of their reign.

When people found out later in life they tended to laugh. I don't think they meant to cause offense - I suppose it's just something oddly specific, and impressive. Some people might think it weird or "sad" but I guess that's their loss.
