When researchers first discovered that very thin fibers are incredibly strong, they were testing them by bending them under a microscope. A new assistant asked why they didn't build a proper tensile strength testing machine. The boss could not imagine that such miniaturization was possible so he told the guy "Go away and don't be silly." He came back with a working prototype.
