Just to clarify - the “slightly autistic” comment was attributed to Joe Absolom, who plays Al Large, Bert’s son. Clunes spoke of “Aspergic”.

Yeah. That sounds like Al. :p

Though also I've seen Joe Absolom in other very different roles as well.

Though he did convince Aunt Ruth to hire him. Al's a quirky character. Though I liked Ruth and Louisa best of all in the series.
