I'm still questioning my sexual orientation but I think I'm bisexual. I too hate being a double minority, though it seems to me more ASD people are LGBT than you would think.

Someone at my local "Square Pegs" meetup (through meetup.com, local meetup where Aspies get together that I go to), some guy that seemed pretty important within the Aspie community said that Aspies were 3x as likely to be gay. I wanted to know if that was a true statistic? It doesn't seem that way...

According to this,

"Autistic adults have, in general, differences in sexuality from the norm. Many more are asexual than in the average population. It is believed that there is a slightly higher pecentage of gays, lesbians, bisexual, and transgendered autistics than in the average population."

Looks like a reputable source apart from the fact they spell percentage as pecentage.

"True statistic" strikes me as an oxymoron when it comes to the actual population of Neurodiverse people, whatever their sexuality may be. No telling how many adults exist on the spectrum utterly unaccounted for, such as myself.

Especially when you consider that society seems to place most of the emphasis of determining forms of autism only on children. And that stigmatization of autism can make life quite precarious for autistic adults. Where a "need-to-know" basis may help them more than hurt them.

The CDC formally claims the ratio of Neurodiverse to Neurotypical people to be 1 in 68. Would it surprise any of this audience if that ratio actually turned out to be on the low side? Perhaps then it could be more accurately determined how many of us may vary in terms of sexual orientation.

Until then, I suppose it remains "a mystery within a mystery".

Im a lesbian and have known a few others on the spectrum. New sexualities are popping up so fast I can barely keep track.
I don't think there is enough research on the subject. It's probably that people on the spectrum are less likely to lie about their sexuality.

I would not be surprised if that statistic is correct. Just in my time on these forums it seems there is a noticeably higher percentage of gay people than I would encounter in my day to day life.

I am Bi, but lean more to the gay side.

I am in a relationship, but it is kind of Rocky at times... He still doesnt quite understand the "autism thing."
