Comfort foods

Hello, I'm a NT writer. And was wondering about some comfort foods. My main character's mother is Japanese. I was curious if certian Japanese foods could be overstimulating. I know that Ramen is a comfort food for many. But what about things with eccentric textures like raw fish or fish eggs? Or maybe it doesn't bother people as much as I think.

I look forward to y'alls answers!

Thank you, I was more asking about if certian textures are bothersome. But I'll definitely take note!
Not particularly. Though I can't stand one food on the plate mixing with another. Giving me a respect for tv dinners. Not so much for the food, but simply how everything was separated.

I'd also like to ask if it's possible to get accustomed to certain textures. If she's been eating these foods since she was little, maybe they wouldn't bother her?

The answers to your question will very according to the individual. For example, I actually like tacos which were previously listed as a food which bother another individual. I don't think there are any foods that all autistic people like or that all autistic people dislike. We are individuals and have our own preferences.

You're right. Thank you!

I can't do poutine as the curds have a texture/throat feel I cannot abide. Congealed snot? Ugh.
Everything I've seen about what people call Poutine is disgusting.

A thing in Australia that's very popular and has been for many years is Chips And Gravy. I love it, most people love it. Note that it's CHIPS, absolutely not stupid skinny little french fries. Chips are much thicker cut and stay hot for much longer, they also don't go soggy. And the Gravy is also hot. The whole thing is served hot enough to cause serious burns if you're not careful. And it must be eaten while still scalding hot or the gravy turns in to some sort of disgusting custard with chunks.

Mushrooms are rubbery. Reminded me of trying snails lol Although i learned to love them. Not that its especially Japanese.

Strict parenting can help. I got what I was given, if i didnt like it i went hungry. My parents were strict and theres almost no food i dont like now. I think there is a window of opportunity that closes after a certain age that sets your palette. No proof of that, just a hunch. I never had kidney growing up, thats one of the rare foods i cannot force myself to like, I tried as an adult, steak and kidney pies. Same with Goats milk. Blegh! Had to pick out the kidney after forcing the kidney bits down. Goats milk tasted so alien as an adult, repulsed me. Goats cheese was fine, probably because i had tried it when my palette was being set. My cousins had soft parenting and are very picky to this day. Over indulgence turned them phobic of real food. They love their processed, hyper palatable junk :D

If you ever see real Aussie chicken salt in the shops buy some and try that on your chips instead of regular salt. It's not chicken flavoured salt, it's a seasoning for rubbing in to the skins of chickens before roasting them. All of our fish and chip shops offer chicken salt as well as regular salt, most people prefer the chicken salt.

We have chicken seasoning, it looks yellow, I could see that working.

Strong smells can also be a sensory aversion when it comes to eating. I struggle with some textures, but strong food smells are a much bigger challenge.

Simple is comfort food for me- nothing too complex or disorganized. Mixed textures, flavors, and smells are very off putting to me.

In case you change your main character's mother to be a ASD dude::

Pizza
Mike and Ikes
Tea
Donuts
Gummi candies
raw carrots

Honestly, if you have the means to -

Go to a Japanese restaurant to try traditional food (not just sushi), or look on YouTube to recreate the average Japanese recipe. Write down the texture/taste/smell/color of the food.

Don't rely just on texture for sensory aversions.
