Boardgames

I love Things, Monopoly and Settlers of Catan, with my favorite being a tie between Things and Catan.

Monopoly is probably my all time favourite, have a city edition, junior edition(daughter's) and android edition.

When at school I played in the chess club, really enjoyed chess but not played for years, too many years.

Enjoy playing pool, snooker and darts which are not exactly boardgames but I see similarities like strategy based and the main focus for others is the game and not the person/s.

Still coming to terms being an aspie and I agree when you say boardgames can suit aspie people as the main focus is the game, rules based and logical.

My daughter plays Minecraft on PS3 and now on PC. She has various board games, all gathering dust, pixels are more popular nowadays. I'll play minecraft with her and find the design part of it interesting and relaxing.

Euro games is new to me and groups who meet and play sounds appealing but also scary.

its interesting you all love monopoly so much seeing its such an old and to be honest outdated game, if you enjoy it though go for it.
chess is a very strategy heavy abstract game, not my thing but its good for some and chess is very classic for a reason.
settlers of catan is a good gateway game to euro games and better more modern board games.
you say pixels are more popular nowadays and while that is clearly true, one of the reasons for the recent explosion in board games is due to people wanting a more social analogue gaming experience with friends rather than a digital one (though most people i know enjoy both).
euro games are very fun (the Germans are by far the rulers of the board game world), and if you want to socialise more board game meetups are great, gamers are very welcoming and friendly and many are aspergic anyway and therefor understanding. personally i find it so much easier to socialise around a board game than in other situations.
hope you all continue with board games and enjoy them.

I like playing Life, Monopoly, Aggravation, Chess, Checkers and Trivial Pursuit. I know that dates me terribly but, hey I've got to get old sooner or later yeah?

How did I miss this thread? I love board and card games, whether they are Euros or Ameritrash or vintage. Some games I play in real life or digitally in apps. San Juan is my latest app favourite.

Off the top of my head, we have these modern/designer games:

The Castles of Burgundy
Agricola (my first of the designer games, the one that started the collection)
Tokaido
Talisman (5th edition), Talisman (2nd or 3rd edition)
Discworld
Lord of the Rings
Small World
Dominion
Carcassonne
Forbidden Island
Splendor
Android Netrunner
Firefly
Star Realms
Elder Sign
Jaipur
Ascension
Munchkin
Junior Catan
Mysterium
Star Trek Deckbuilding Game (the next phase)
Love Letter
Pandemic

On our wish list:

Twilight Struggle
Time Stories
Caverna
Stone Age
Terra Mystica
Star Trek Fleet Captains
Ticket to Ride?
Arkham Horror? (Already have Elder Sign so do we really need another on this theme?)
Dixit? (I try to limit the games that require more than two players as we don't have many opportunities to play in a group)

I love the really heavily themed games, and I generally prefer ones that aren't too competitive. So Munchkin is a bit mean for me, haha. I still play it but...

I don't know whether I prefer cooperative games or Euro games where you are playing parallel to each other to get the most points. And I do love the deckbuilding mechanic, so I love Star Realms, Ascension, etc.

I wasn't much of a game person, but did like MONOPOLY, and Risk. I liked the PC version of risk too, since you could play solo.

Oh, and Candyland too. Candyland is a great game. I always liked the board graphics, Gumdrop Mountains, etc. I actually played that once in recent history

We have LOTR Risk that we picked up in an op shop but we haven't played it. Will have to give it a try.

I don't mind Monopoly but I hadnt played it for years until recently when we introduced our son to the game. The competitive/penalising nature of it can be a bit off putting for me.

Lately we've been playing backgammon again. We also play Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit sometimes. Our son loves trivia games including those on TV.

And Battleships can be fun. :D

Just last week I picked up a vintage Holly Hobbie's Pets and Gardens Game for $2... Took me back! :) A fairly simple race to fill one's garden with flowers, with random rewards and penalties given on two types of card (a la Monopoly).

My parents have some games they've held onto that they promised I could play again before they sell them. Squatter, Masterpiece and Stock Market. Looking forward to that.

On the topic of vintage games, there was one from the late 70s/early 80s called Pay Day that I liked as a kid, and the classic Park and Shop!!! Loved that game. And there was the Royal Game of Ur, which I really loved, especially for the beautiful playing board and wooden pieces. It was pretty unusual.

I wholeheartedly agree with this. The topic of conversation is decided for you and you don't need to figure out what to talk about next. It's great!

Also, there are so many different types of modern board game out there, with all manner of themes, that there is bound to be one for everyone.

For anyone who is interested in trying something new, there are lots of board gaming sites online, and many videos reviewing games or showing how to play.

One thing to keep in mind is that modern/designer board games can get pretty expensive, so going to a board game cafe or local game night is a good idea to help you find something you like before parting with your money. Try before you buy! Then you figure out what style of game you prefer and can look for others along the same lines. Board Game Geek is a great place to seek out new games.

nice to see another hard-core gamer. I've played 17 of those games, i cant be bothered to make my own list but there are some really good games on the list there.
recently I've been getting really into android netrunner. and twilight struggle is really really good, and fairly inexpensive it is probably my second faviroute game. keep it up.

Likewise! :D

Yes, we have been meaning to play it again for months and months but haven't got around to it. We're still in that phase of trying to make sense of the rules (I remember we were confused last time about how viruses work) and need to play regularly over a short period to let it really sink in. I think we're going to have to watch a video to remind us because I don't want to read the whole book again, haha. Sometimes watching someone else's game just makes it all fall into place. :)

yeah it is hard for newcomers but once you have the hang of it its a great game. i play NBN and sunny Lebaeu
who do you play with?

who do you play with?

My husband. He plays with friends every Monday (either board games or they run regular D & D or pathfinder campaigns) as well so he gets to try out new stuff before we buy. I do loads of online research into games I might like, too, and we swap notes. He prefers competitive games and used to do tabletop war gaming, too.

We also play with our son sometimes. He's nearly seven but loves Star Realms (his absolute fave), Carcassonne, Catan Junior, Talisman, and others, and is obsessed with watching us play Firefly, haha. We recently got a second Star Realms deck just so we can now play three player games with him. :) We play online, too, but you're limited to two players.

sounds wonderful i play on Monday and Wednesday evenings at a university board game club, and then i meet with friends on Saturday sometimes to play as well, i role-play on Thursday evenings as well, none of my past girlfriends have ever been interested in board games which is understandable and fair, hopefully some future girlfriends are interested.

Not really understandable to me :D How can anyone not get into collecting resources to build a civilisation, or saving the world from imminent death?!:D

I'm sure there are girls at the board game club or role playing nights? And there are loads of girls online who play games, so I'm sure there's a gaming social network out there. BGG has a good forum, I think. Bet you can find a gamer geek to fall for! :D (not that you're necessarily looking for love.) What I mean is I'm definitely not the only female on the planet who loves board games.

oh i know you are not the only one i was merely stating that in my experience the women I've been with are not interested, there are a couple women in the clubs i go to but precious few compared with males, i think board game clubs need to take it upon themselves to make it easier more accessible and more comfortable for new people to join of both genders. i might look around the BGG forum thanks for the idea.

Thats an awesome site. I found it crossover collecting. If you ever come accross one of these (c. 1963), let me know. I'll take out a second mortgage and...

You want this particular battle, Metauro? I'll definitely look out for it! Although the chances of it being here is Oz are unlikely, I may spot it online. :) I see on BGG that it's on a few people's wish lists.

My faves, in no particular order: Monopoly, Yahtzee, Life, Clue (classic version), Mouse Trap, Jenga, Risk, Chess, Checkers, Backgammon, Sorry!, Connect Four, Stratego
