Late 16th century; earliest use found in William Webbe (fl. ?1566–1591), author. From classical Latin palimbacchīus metrical foot consisting of three syllables, two long and one short from Hellenistic Greek παλιμβάκχειος from ancient Greek πάλιν back, backwards + Hellenistic Greek βακχεῖος.
