This year, try to look through thrift stores, antique/consignment stores, or make something for your loved ones.

Perhaps try to buy something second hand that is made from materials such as wood, natural cloth, or steel. Avoiding plastics.

Baked goods or hand crafts always make wonderful gifts.

Would small businesses be ideal as well?

That is a great idea.

How about not giving gifts and giving any leftover money to the disadvantage or impovished?
For me Christmas was always about joy and charity.
Giving back to others
I love gifts and material things as much as anyone.
But Christmas is really a day given from Christ by God as a gift. So you can eat ànd laugh with family, put up some decorations and be grateful and content for the things you have.
I mean I know a gift can spark some joy for those going through a hard time so if people do decide to do gifts it is ok too
And I love your idea as well
But this is just an idea for anyone who is like I am sick of doing gifts and material things and it would be nice to put together a hamper of food or goods for the needy or present or a present under a tree of the disadvantaged.

most of my holiday gifting will begin in my kitchen

I often give things out of my collections to share them with others.

Something that I also like to give are experiences and/or spending time together, as that provides for memories.

Antiques & collectibles, those rare finds at thrift stores, buying secondhand items - esp. older items which might just have better qualities than their "newer" counterparts.

There's a growing interest in what's old is new again themes.

Anybody consider gifts that hang on walls - as empty spaces on walls can be filled with such itmes as art pictures, vintage ADs, sculptures?
