I caught a crow today in my friend's garage and
let it loose in her back yard. One of the garage
doors was open, but the bird wanted to go out
a window.

He was panting from all the times he bumped
against the window trying to get out. After I
let him loose he flew away, but he returned to
eat some corn from the feeder that is in the
back yard.
 
Toronto eyeing new plan to ban cats from going outdoors unless on leash

These were environmentalist and former Scarborough city councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker’s words to Toronto City Council Wednesday as a city committee discussed a plan that could prohibit cat owners from allowing felines to roam freely outdoors.

The motion, moved by Councillor for Ward 17 - Don Valley North Shelley Carroll, is rooted in the belief outdoor cats can be a danger to local ecosystems, hunting bird and rodent populations, and are themselves at risk of being hit by vehicles or attacked by wildlife while roaming.

Currently, city staff are proposing bylaws be changed to prohibit pet owners from allowed their pet to roam "at large" in the city, with the exception of cats and domesticated pigeons. Carroll wants to scrub cats from the proposed change, while still permitting pigeons to remain at large. Under the proposed bylaw, ats would still be allowed outdoors while on leash.

Members of council on the city’s economic and community development committee voted in favour of the motion by a show of hands.

“I’m moving [this motion] today because, truly I think people don’t want free-roaming cats,” Carroll said. “It is horrendously traumatic when you find a cat that has met with misfortune.”

However, the bylaw change hasn’t received final approval.

A cat saved from a house fire has become the first pet in London to use a specially adapted animal oxygen mask.
Fire crews attended a blaze in Paddington, central London, on Friday and saved two cats from the ground floor, putting a mask on one of them.
Station officer Nathan Beeby, who was at the scene, said the apparatus "ultimately saved the cat's life".
Masks will be carried by fire trucks in Battersea, Paddington, Richmond and Hammersmith as part of a pilot scheme.
If the scheme is successful, the masks will be rolled out to fire stations across the capital.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) has said the specialist equipment can be used on other pets, including dogs, rabbits, snakes and mice.

Collisions with unpainted turbines actually increased over time, while collisions with painted turbines went down. (The researchers investigated the possibility that painted turbines were driving birds into their unpainted neighbors, and found it was likely not a concern, as fatalities were increasing all across the wind farm).

Some species of high concern also benefited greatly—after the study turbines were painted, the number of white tailed eagles killed by them went from six down zero.

Although this is promising news, there are some things left to be worked out. It’s not clear whether the method will help bats, which are also at great risk from turbines. It was not effective at all for willow ptarmigan, ground birds which tend to run into the turbines’ base rather than its blades. And since the study was done at a single site, it’s a good idea to repeat it elsewhere, to make sure birds in other places react similarly.

But a method like painting a single blade—something 'practical and functional,' as the authors write, that doesn’t appreciably increase the cost or reduce the viability of wind farms overall—is exciting. If it is generalizable, it could be a way to make the skies a bit safer for those who were there first. "

They counted dead birds for three and a half years? People truly are idiots sometimes. That is an insane amount of dead birds. :eek: Those bird grinders will kill all the birds long before they have time to paint them all.

Did you?

The article said the raw numbers were small,
not "insane."

The study was over the course of 3 and half years.
They weren't saying there was a mammoth pile
of dead birds that took them three and a half years
to count.

They stood by and counted dead birds for three and half years. Not weeks, years. I don't need an exact number to know a lof of birds were killed. We have those idiotic bird grinders here too and I have seen what they do. :( It's upsetting.
 
That's why they are trying out methods to reduce the
number of birds colliding with them.
 
How do you recommend they make them to
reduce the collision factor to zero? What
feasible corrections can you suggest?
 
I remember we stopped the car in Seattle for a turtle. But l was preggies. But l got out -shoo it off to safety. But salamanders are so cute.

I took off with the jeep, and all of the sudden the senior lizard of my lizard squatters that seem to be around my garbage can was on my car window. I panicked and hit the wipers and panicked more. He looked at me said -omg, woman drivers!! So then l turned off the wipers. Turn the car around, drove in my carport, shoo him off the car. Sadly, he doesn't come out to greet me anymore. Omg, another failed relationship in my lifetime. This was about 2 weeks ago.
