The Man Drawer...

Just in case anyone gets the wrong idea, let me explain.

I've been watching some old stand-up comedies recently - one of which is the 2008 show Live and Laughing by Michael McIntyre.
One of the sketches he does is about men finding a vacant drawer in the house and taking possession of said vacant drawer, which becomes their "man drawer" and filled with all kinds of items - useful or not.

Here's the sketch:

My questions are as follows:

1. Do you have a 'man drawer' (or some equivalent drawer) in your home.
2. What kind of stuff do you put in it.

For me personally, my 'man drawer' is actually a cupboard with all kinds of bits and pieces, including the leads, old tech, batteries, takeaway menus, information booklets, etc.

We always called that the 'junk drawer'. Mine always have cup hooks, different size screws, bread ties, and just odds and end things that I need from time to time.

I have a drawer.

It lacks any gender definition.

It's a gender-free drawer.

I also have a shed. Similar scenario there too. Gender wise.

Honestly I think the link to gender here is fallacious.

Most drawers in my house are all full of mixed junk. Screws, nails, bands, takeaway menus, tool manuals, pencils, paint brushes, food clips, sweets, USB cables. ..etc. Yes, bulbs, fuses, batteries, money. . Nothing stays 'pure' as in what it's allocated to be! I know exactly where it all is though..usually.

Gender neutral. How can he even think of assigning gender to this? Guess that says more about him & his attitude! ☺

I have a drawer full of man drawers. But I guess I could say its a unisex drawer as my wife borrowed them occasionally when she was pregnant.

Actually, the only true 'Man Drawer' would be a drawer full of baggy, stained Y Fronts. No woman or modern man would go near them. So MM, regardless of his pink shirts, foppish hair & slightly plump, posh yet 'harmless' but misogynistic mannerisms probably has a drawer full ☺

I have a gender neutral drawer with 1 hammer, 1 multi ended screw driver, scotch tape, package wrap tape, a metal measuring tape (the man kind, lol) , command hooks and replacement backings for them, sharpie pens for addressing packages, some rubber bands and other assorted stuff. Batteries have their own drawer,
take out menus also have their own drawer.

you almost sound autistic

Maybe man drawer comes about when you can't have a full on man cave. But l remember back in the day, when told dad is in his office (loo).

LOL, are you saying that the loo came about because there was no room for an office (for the man of the house)?

I think it’s completely adorable, the idea of a man having a drawer full of entirely useless, squirreled-away dross and bric-a-brac. Ha!

Maybe his wife has control of pretty much everything else in the house so he just called it the "Man" drawer to emphasize that its his? My Dad - who I'm pretty sure is also somewhere on the spectrum - and my Uncle also have "man" drawers for different bits and pieces and I certainly wouldn't refer to either of them as misogynistic.
My guess is people have these drawers/cupboards and just name them different things - like how the main room where you sit on the sofa to watch TV can be called a Living Room, a Sitting Room, a Lounge or something else.

In a way, I'm reminded of something I read/heard regarding man caves that men create a 'man cave' in the attic, basement, garage or shed because they've "lost the battle for the rest of the house".

That makes sense. Women have always been primarily responsible for maintaining the household (even today, despite also working full-time jobs), so I can see how a man would regard it as “woman’s domain” and consequently claim the garage, attic, or spare bedroom as his own. The thing is, women do this, too, except we tend to go outside the home for sanctuary e.g. the spa, salon, gym, friend’s house, etc. When we’re home, we’re cooking, cleaning, helping kids with homework, etc.—our “man cave” is getting away from home.

I wonder how many autistic people have “autism caves.” I can’t understand how married autistic people with kids can handle family life. I would go mad. I need solitude, quiet, and the ability to control my own space.

Respectfully, I think what is being described here is culturally created, heterosexual domestic arrangements, historically based on the male as provider and out hunting, fighting or at work, and the woman making the home.

Here we often talk about the way NTs and their culture dominates and excludes. This is an example of how hetorosexually predicated norms describe the world, and are perpetuated.

we have the described man drawers :)

Over time they've been downsized from wall cupboards to drawers and referred to as just "The Drawer"

"Where's such and such?"
"It's in 'The Drawer'"

I await; in anticipation, for that telephone call...
... because you just never know when the world may need a spare rubber suction foot for a free standing kitchen appliance,

a yellowing receipt for a gadget manufactured in 1998,
I no longer have mine but they may need to exchange theirs,

or a lucky 8 ball keyring complete with various inoperable keys.

I'm prepared for when the day arrives :)
