Tattoos

Been thinking of tattoos lately. I kind of want one. I have a few ideas floating around, but haven't really settled on one yet. Also would like one on a place where I can easily hide it, is the other thing.

Do you guys have any? What do you think of them?

Or, whether you're serious about wanting one (or another one)...what what you get if you did?

Despite what a lot of people think, I don't have any. And along those same lines I apparently give the impression I'd actually be more impulsive and just get anything I'd ever want for a tattoo.

So, what do I want? Not that sure, there's some ideas floating around. I don't care for having it somewhere I can hide it. I mean, if I want design X and I feel this fits best on for instance my face... changing the design so it fits on my arm isn't getting the same tattoo. And if I go that route, I might better not go for any and keep frustrated because I'm being held back for some reason.

I did spend quite some time at the local tattooshop... don't go there that much nowadays... just don't feel a need to be around. But when I went there I'd usually browse around a bit, check some magazines, talk to the owner (who coincidentally lives around the corner, thus we run into each other a lot if he's walking the dog), discuss some designs and such. Wouldn't say he's a "friend" as such... but it is someone I have convo's with quite frequently.

But yeah, the question... what do I want... preferably a personal design. The designs and books around are fine by all means, but I wouldn't be happy to get anything I didn't design myself. Having the idea by myself or having it influenced/inspired is a totally different deal I think. Especially in this age where everything has been done before. Fact still is I'd like something I made myself; either by means of pen/paper, digital or as a 3d sculpt of sorts.

10 years ago or so I did toy around a bit with having a barcode of my date of birth in my neck. The entire tribal hype back then didn't appeal to me as much. Oh wait, that was 15 years ago or so. Nah, but the 'trends in tattooworld" don't really affect me I guess. I don't care for chinese symbols or zodiac stuff either... but by all means if someone wants it' I'm not saying you shouldn't. A few years ago I did have an idea for a tradtional flame design on my lower arm. I did wanted them green though (instead of a more traditional yellow/orange thing). The reason for such color was cause green does kinda add up with envy (or so I've read) and I kinda felt this entire "I don't fit in... and I'm envyous for it"... that thought got lost over time, so I might even be happy not to remind myself about such a superficial "train of thought". But yeah, I'd be "burning green with envy". And besides that, I like the lower arm flame tattoos.

Recently I've been toying with a couple of ideas;

- A steampunk-ish wind-up heart on my chest to cover my own. I do intend to get that as a sculpt design somehow (scraps, tin, cogs and such). The hopeless romantic in me would probably wish that, if I'd end up in a relationship, she'd have a key tattoo'ed somewhere. (don't get me wrong I'm not forcing anyone anything, but that's just a overly romanticized idea of such a tattoo)
- My firstname intial M stylized as wings on my back. The analogy of a superhero does play in here a bit. Besides the M is a great shape to work from such.
- A cephalopod/kraken starting on my shoulder with it's tentacles going down my arm. The reasoning behind it is, that I do like writing/drawing/designing and such, and ink is a fun analogy for using a pen
- Probably something... Alice in wonderland related. Might just as well be the 4 suits (hearts, spades etc.) or a more eleborate sleeve. If anything I'd probably go for the American McGee interpretation because I like it more rather than the Disney one for example. But still I'd look into composition myself if I'm not drawing the chracters.

But in general I do think I do not have "cheap" ideas for tattoos... which kinda bothers me. Anything I have will set me back at least 500 euro... and I could easily count on double that amount for a single tattoo. Most tattoos I have in mind aren't really subtle things and I don't believe in having one, just for the sake of having.

When I was younger I didn't want to get tatoos for 2 reasons:
1) didn't want to get an infection :) you never know :)
2) was concerned that if I didn't like it, it would be too much trouble to get rid of it, if I even could get rid of it.

Nowadays, if I got them I would get something of a tribal kind, like sleeves on my arms, but then again it's too much of a commitement, so I probably will never get any. I remember a friend of mine got one on her ankle, so it's not too obvious. But I'm not the kind of person who would want to get a tatoo and then hide it, what's the point then :) but that's just me.

It's against my religion to the point I wouldn't be allowed to be buried in a Jewish cemetery, but before becoming "Orthodox" I thought of several.

- Brass knuckles. I was going to get it near my pelvic bone. This was because I owned some and was well known for fighting.
- Frog. My favorite animal.
- A fairy. In honor of my mom (RIP) who loved fairies.
- The Scorpio sign.
- The word "EUTHANASIA" after my novel.

I only have one tattoo right now. I think I have a picture of it on AC, but I know I have a picture of it on Facebook. It's my last name on my left upper arm. I really like it. I got it done about a year ago and dont regret it at all.

I think that tattoos covering over half of someones body is just stupid. Tattoos of meaningless empty symbols are pretty stupid too. If you want one make sure it's something that really represents something to you. My ink is my last name, that really means a lot to me because of my father's death (and in a lighter way, because I'm known by my last name. Im never referred to as my first name :D)

Could be interests, a small portion of a song or poem, a meaningful picture or symbol. The fear of regret later on is something to consider, but if you chose the right idea you'll never regret getting it. Try to pick something you can get in plain black ink too, colored tattoo ink fades somewhat fast and looks bad in a few years.

And you asked about a location you can hide easily? Mine is on my upper arm so when I'm working in the warehouse shirtless or in a sleeve-less shirt its clearly visible but when I go to church even a T-shirt covers it easily.

I also find too many tattoos to be annoying. I think a half sleeve on the arm (kinda Yakuza style) is okay on some people, if it's done well enough, but when tattoos spread all over your body (especially on your neck and face) I don't like. I feel like tattoos shouldn't drown the person, just maybe add some decor...like jewelry, I suppose. Too much is just a mess to look at, I think.

It reminded me, I knew a guy once, he showed a picture of his friend, saying something like, "look how awesome it is!" every inch of that guys body was covered with tatoos :) I thought it was insane :) too bad I didn't save the picture. My personal opinion, when you get a tatoo, try to think how it's going to look when you're really really old :)

My sort of my logic regarding tattoos that you can easily hide. I would also be paranoid about it effecting employment. I worked with a girl who had a big chest-piece tattoo and had trouble landing jobs because of it. When she did get them, she was pretty much forced to wear turtlenecks constantly.

An upper arm tattoo is probably the most visible thing I could do (since I don't wear sleeveless tops anyhow), except if I were to get married or end up doing anything formal, I would actually feel weird for having it then. I think as far as visible tattoos go, tiny ones on the hands or wrist seem to be the best bet. Then again, they're tiny and kind of pointless unless you can think of something especially clever. Also tiny tattoos tend to be harder to do correctly and often end up looking poorly done after a while.

Imagine...I haven't thought about that :D makes complete sense! I know, I definitely wouldn't get anything on my body, but if I had something on my arm I could always say, "it is a manifestation of my religious views" then they would have to accept it because otherwise it's discrimination :D like that's going to work... but then again, maybe it would :)

I think the employment thing does depend a bit on where you work, and what do you want for a career I guess. I couldn't really settle for any formal jobs that care too much about appearance I think.

I remember that at the job agency they even told me to get rid of my piercings and get a "normal" haircut, yet they never confirm that companies don't hire people on such "shallow" reasons. Mainly because that in fact would be discriminating. Also, a thing I always felt is that if you hold back yourself to NOT do X or Y, in the end you'll end up annoyed and frustrated, especially if it's a big part of you that has such desires. But if you're like "meh... I don't care to either have or don't have a tattoo" I guess you might settle for either not having one, or having one that can be concealed.

I got rid of my piercings to seem less suspicious and to be able to pull the "sweet blonde Southern girl" card in NY.
How malicious.

Thats definetly something to consider. I know a lot of people that have got rejected from jobs from simple little harmless tattoos. Pretty unfair.

Not to sound mean to New Yorkers... but from what I hear most southern girls are already much sweeter then many New Yorkers. Just from what I hear about the city, not experience :)

Probably in the future, but I don't see myself spending a good chunk of my money on one. I could jot down some reasons here but whatever.

Cost, the bigger the more expensive
Permanent and hard to get rid of
Unattractive to potential employers, if they're visible
Easier for anyone (namely authorities) to identify you
...and I really have no reason to pay someone to draw on my body at this point in my life :S

Honest truth - Southern girls are much sweeter, but just as big of skanks.
I'm probably the scariest thing to happen to NYC since Son of Sam.
