Surely the term itself is merely another way for one person to express love for another, nothing to do with actual souls (in which I do not believe). Love isn't a rational thing, so it's almost inevitable that it breeds irrational ideas such as soul mates. You don't even need to know someone to be able to love them; love at first sight is a reaction, both chemical and psychological, not destiny, and it usually goes unrequitted. People fall in and out of love all the time. Couples that stay together for life do so for a number of reasons: familiarity, fear of not being able to find someone else, tolerance, etc. Love is rarely the primary factor because once the initial romance passes people are forced to find other things to bind them together. I guess it helps if both parties share irrational beliefs, which is probably why marriages amongst very religious people are, statistically, more successful than others.
