First headline I saw on the news this morning:

"Mutant Chernobyl Wolves"

That's not recent news. I'm sure I heard about it a month ago or so. Science Fiction becoming fact.

Here's something random that I can't figure out where else to put it.

I am learning about machine care and small repair. I know that one of the main reasons a riding lawn mower becomes useless is that the deck rusts out. There is some rust on the riding lawn mower,

so I google to find out how to fix it and guess what I found out!

I have to worry about rust on the underside of the deck, which I can't see or access!

Everyday a new challenge!

I probably take that a few steps beyond simply cleaning decks.

Had a riding mower that was worn out with a rusted deck
Bought another one that was in a slight fire that had a clean deck

Stripped it apart, sandblasted it inside and out then refinished it with truck bed liner

I played mix and match with parts from both machines in order to have an improved and refurbished one.

As a general rule, after mowing with any of my machines, they get raised with a portable crane then pressure washed to remove any and all grass including the undersides of the decks.

A lot easier to do preventive maintenance than to replace good machinery due to neglect.

Pressure washers can be wonderful, but I've seen the bearings on bicycles ruined by them. I fix holes with fiberglass, and could easily make a deck rustproof underneath. Personally, I just scrape off the grass when it builds up too much.

Bicycles have open bearings.

I use only rubber sealed bearings.
The balls generally get wasted from mowing long before anything else.

Yeah fiberglas will work on a hole for a short while.
Scraping takes a lot of time and in my honest opinion is substandard to my method.

My idea is to prevent the rust, not just deal with it as it occurs.

A pressure washer can defeat a bearing seal. I do my fiberglass with epoxy, and it has been totally durable on my cars. Nothing else can seal in rust.

Nitro, I agree prevention is better than letting things go and get rusty. In case you missed the drama, I am picking up the pieces of neglected tools and equipment because my husband left me last fall and these were all in his purview.

In the distant past I did some mechanical work, but not in a long time. I have almost zero experience with heavy machinery.

I don’t have the equipment to lift up the riding lawn mower and I don’t know how to get underneath. Even though there is a lot of mowing to do, I would almost prefer a regular lawn mower because I am more familiar with it and it is small enough for me to handle, as in turn it over to clean or repair.

I have a lot of challenges ahead, but am taking them one at a time.
