Officially Diagnosed this morning

Rasputin

ASD / Aspie
V.I.P Member
After being referred to a team of specialists for insomnia, I was diagnosed by a psychiatrist this morning with autism spectrum disorder (ASD1). I am starting CBT therapy in two weeks to help me get in touch with my emotions. Also I have to bring my wife in for my next doctors appointment.

I guess I don't have to worry about pursuing a diagnosis now. I got one as a result of treating my insomnia.

Congratulations. I hope it brings you a sense of closure and some better understanding.

We'll mail you your official membership card soon. :p

I hope this is an outcome you are happy with; or if your processing speed is anything like mine, that you'll be happy with tomorrow or after the weekend...

How was the psychiatrist, compared to your expectations?

The psychiatrist was very good, and exceeded my expectations. I feel generally good about it now, because my suspicions have been validated. And yes I process very fast.

No, I am also on the High Functioning end of the spectrum. I'll have to get you to tell me how to add a line under my avatar as you did.

Hover the mouse over your avatar on the top right part of the screen and a drop-down menu will appear. Select "Personal Details". On that screen, you can enter a custom title.

I was strangely relieved, and feel somewhat validated.

Nothing strange about feeling relief @Rasputin. It's a common reaction, so in that respect you're perfectly 'normal' :D

I'm pleased to read that your experience with the psychiatrist was positive, as having read your previous threads, I'm aware that you had concerns.

The sense of validation is a powerful feeling and can be quite overwhelming, and it can provoke negative as well as positive emotions. Be kind to yourself and take the time to process your thoughts.

@Rasputin, congratulations not so much on the diagnosis itself, as on getting that landmark achieved.

When I was diagnosed, it made me re-evaluate much of my past in light of the new information; then I also had to reconsider my present and future in view of it. This took time - maybe a couple of years before I stopped pondering it. Whether you're a fast processor or slow, do not be surprised if you think about this a lot for months as you fit it into your sense of who you are.

Thanks! I am sure I will be doing a lot of reflecting.

Hey!
Fairly new to this myself.
Hope everything starts to make a little more sense now. It is starting to for me, and it's made a big difference.
Best of Luck!

Thank you! I might be asking you questions before long, as I have no idea what to expect going forward.

Exactly. Now you ARE "going forward". ;)

Self awareness means empowerment. With or without a formal diagnosis.
