New Power Supply Design

This is interesting. Corsair, well known for their power supplies has introduced a new design. Instead of all the modular ports being at the back, they have been put to the side.

Of course to be optimally functional, it requires having a case that allows for a certain amount of space between the power supply and a case's external panel. Which of course may also be just a gimmick to keep it all proprietary, with buyers not only buying Corsair's power supply, but also investing in their computer cases. Still, I like the idea. If you have adequate space, that it's inherently easier to add or subtract modular cables accordingly.

Likely not a component you want if you have an inherently narrow computer case.

I've seen a few different configurations over the years, if this is just another available option and not the way it's going to be from now on then I think it's a good thing.

Yeah, I wouldn't be too quick in guessing that other major competitors would jump on this. But then I suspect even with Corsair they will still likely continue to be producing their the majority of their present line of power supplies with all the ports to the back.

It all comes down to the case you have...and whether or not it's wide enough to allow the necessary space required for that type of power supply.

There are cases out there that mount the PSU on it's side. Knowing my luck the power cable connectors on this would face the wrong way!

Sometimes I've contemplated buying a bench test kit instead of a case. In some ways it would make life a lot easier but it'd be a real bastard to keep clean.

True. But then I've never had a case where I considered it "easy" to clean either. But then I also recognize how too tight of mesh covering fans can inhibit airflow where it's needed. So while I like to limit the fine dust that intrudes into a case, I also recognize that it's going to happen and why it pays to periodically clean the insides of a computer before it turns into a dust-heap.

Living in the desert, that really fine dust intrudes everywhere, no matter if every window and door is shut tight.

I'd love to build another gaming PC, but when the van is done I'll be making the jump to a gaming laptop.

Boo & hiss.

I'll do what I did with my last laptop, and get one of those USB laptop fan risers/coolers:

I had shortlisted a Legion laptop when I was last looking at buying one. It had a good price point.

But I think I'll stick with PC Specialist, so I can build my own to spec.
