I fairly recently discovered that my son (15) has AS. This is a self diagnosis but I am pretty darn certain. He had some testing done by the school but it really was sort of pointless as it was inconclusive but in all honestly they really couldn't determine it with the tests they do. I did discover that his memory is quite amazing though.
I have some questions for you that are familiar with AS. I am wondering if I should tell him that we think he has Aspergers or not? Not sure if it would do more harm that good.
Also, he has some habits/tics and I was just wondering if it is normal or not. He brushes his hand through his hair all the time like he's trying to knock something out of it and sometimes he puts his fingers in his mouth afterwards. He also rubs his mouth on his shirt all the time. Especially after brushing his teeth and always complains about a 'bad" taste in his mouth after brushing his teeth!? He used to bite his fingers nonstop but that has seemed to slow down a bit. I worry so about kids making fun of him and pray that he doesn't do these things at school.
He also has very awkward , um postures? Not sure how to explain this but when he sits down he kinda falls into his seat and it's almost like his legs don't bend lol. And he will do it really fast. He mumbles when he talks, and is always always grumpy and acts angry.
He is hard to talk to and never talks to his daddy much and will hardly answer him when he tries to talk to him. It really hurts my husband and definitely makes it hard to have any closeness.
Oh, and when I ask him something sometimes he will make a weird/mad kinda face as he answers me. And he says "NO" alllllll the time. To like everything, almost like a tic. For instance I'll say, " you need to go take your shower" and he will say "No" real fast. It's almost comical but it makes me sad as he is so idk, goofy sometimes.
I was able to get his diagnosed with ADD and on medication. We went through 3 and finally settled on the 3rd one which is not a stimulant. They seemed to make him even more agitated than he normally is. NOt sure if it is helping but he is doing pretty well on getting his homework done after school. And I was able to get him on the 504 plan because of the add diag. WHich is going to help him as his grades have steadily been falling due to forgetfulness to do his HW and losing things. Also he gets extra time on tests, quizzes, etc. as he is pretty slow working. But he is very smart and can remember information extremely well, just not when homework is due and stuff like that. Sorry so long winded I just don't have anyone to talk to about this.
Thanks for any responses.
