Mimicking people from tv series ( shows) and learning.

I got obsessed with the American show: suits. Within one week, I have watched all 7! And find that characters I particularly admire, I feel a sense of becoming them ie mimicking their actions and what they say.

Also, because they are based on reality; I suddenly find that I can negiotiate a situation better than before.

Me too. This recently happened to me at the cinema. The main character which was a guy, I could take on his character and picked up his personality which gave me a short term confidence boost. I didn’t tell anyone how I felt because I’m so used to this happening to me. I think it’s called ‘imprinting’. I can also mimic their actions and what they say to a certain extent.

I hardly ever watch TV these days... but I used to love to watch MacGyver (the original one).
I always wanted to be him (or like him)... I watched some episodes not long ago and they are so chessy... its funny now, but its still a good show in its own chessy way.

which took what you are saying right back to Tourettes (which i have) and ASD... and other stuff that is... a little disturbing, but some people just got to compare ASD to anything they can find bad...

Its not that they say anything bad, just some kind of crude comparisons.
I'm guessing at some point we will all be called the spawn of hell, or something worse...
But it is informative.

All because we tend to mimic the "smart people" coughing saying BS....
Maybe we just cant find a costume good enough for the greatness we hide inside us.

I don't really "mimic" characters, but I do pick out certain traits of them I want to emulate and value. I tend to be drawn towards confident characters and characters who are emotionally strong or who deal with adversity. It all helps me cope with life situations in a way.

I do that a ton. I start to take on the mentality of any characters I like in books, TV or movies. I adopt the vocabulary of books I read. If I read something by David Brin, suddenly I'm dropping giant $10 words on everyone. If I read something vulgar - well, I've learned not to read that stuff anymore. I have to be very careful of the media I consume. It's not just profanity, sex, and violence - I have to watch out for the emotions portrayed, because it will affect my emotions.

Even better, I've found I can do it with people around me. I have made great strides socially by picking someone I admire, someone who's "getting it right" and studying them until I feel I can copy their behavior in an appropriate way. When I have some challenge or trial, I think "how would x respond to this?" And my internal simulation of x shows me what they would do. Then when I do that, I look like a mature, sociable person.

I don't consciously mimic anyone including TV or movie characters, but I am bound to simply because everyone learns from what they sense around them, especially from other people and that is also how we learn to speak in the first place. When we are born we have very limited built in instincts and everything else is learnt from our surroundings, especially from people and at first mostly from our parents / guardians. In fact speech in general is 100% mimicking various combinations of lots of different people. This still goes on at a slower pace even into adulthood, for instance if you move to another region where the same language is spoken in a different accent, at first everyone sounds like they've got a strong accent to you, but eventually after a number of years they will sound normal without any accent and you will also speak with their accent. It goes beyond just speech however and what we sense around us, especially from other people also greatly influences who we are, yes I believe we all have our own unique personality, but how much of this was created by other people around us and also by the media? Yes we also pick up what we watch on the TV and from other media, and it's mostly done subconsciously, that is partly what makes the media so powerful and it's also extremely influential. Many very powerful people know the true power of the media and use it to their full advantage giving them a level of control over mass numbers of people, in my opinion it's often not good either. The people who are the fastest and most greatly influenced are in fact our children, but adults can still be significantly influenced too. As I've written on a number of occasions, power = corruption! Most people accept that advertisements are influential and it's a fact they they work, but how many children's programmes and even movies do you think might have underlying and purposeful influences on our children?
