Maybe this new drug will cure autism?

I have diverticular disease, which is IBS on steroids. I am constantly plagued by bowel upset and chronic diarrhea. I got talked into trying probiotics and it helped, but it was wickedly expensive for the good ones with high CFU counts. They come in liquid form and you keep them refregerated (yogurt is useless). A nutritionist I saw for diabetes got me turned onto fermenting my own kraut. Holy hell, what a difference it made for my health. Bowel upset gone. Diarrhea gone. Quality BMs you can set your watch to. Made me a believer.

I agree the bacteria have a limited shelf life. I start to go sideways within weeks if I am not constantly replenishing my flora with new stock.
I know ßaurkraut works, mentioned on previous threads. Probiotics isn't fair to consumers due to prices without evidence, in my unprofessional opinion.

Use vitamin B complex daily, I never realised it's for gut microbes, thought that was c0Q10
I noticed when vitamin B was finished and only had vit A that I had illness symptoms returning. So I take vitamin AB daily and lot of other supplements as if most Asperger's are anemic, im 10x worse deficient.

Kombucha? Um

Appears various factors affect autism, so curing some co morbid like IBS or fatigue are possible. A complete cure, I think saying more like preventing autism in first place may just be Environ factors.
Seems we may have somewhat choice on cure options.

It offends me when people wish to cure what I regard as having been given a wonderful gift.
I must say not often but at times I wish I had friends, but friends I can relate too. My mother and I used to get on very well, sometimes fight but everyone does. I'm not sure if everyone thinks we social num-num that desire attention but don't fit in, wondering about group meet up to see if I can't find some decent company. Perhaps my son can relate to some of people and just be more normal, happy teen.

but at times I wish I had friends, but friends I can relate too.
I just find groups of people who share my interests, do things with them, and come away with unexpected friends. When I look for fun I end up having friends, but when I go looking for friends I end up having no fun.

Sorry if that didn't make sense. Most of my life doesn't, as it turns out.

Fun, hmmm
I mean relate, conversation, understanding. All the things hide behind the mask.

Honestly, avoiding dairy but since I'd eaten too much garlic to keep-parasite free all my gut microbes died. Then I realised pickled food lack lactobacillus or streptococci
Usually two helpings of plain yoghurt ensures one is regular, I don't have patience for probiotics....
A) take too long to work
B) cost a lot
C) hidden ingredients since unregulated (why after all this time is gut-brain link recognised but the probiotics are up to ****)

Didn't want to buy this, pharmacist couldn't help. So R250 for probiflora and ingredients on bottle don't match....cause online it's admitted there's sugar additive, huh? What else, I think yeasts and all kinds of stuff, or lactose derivatives, lies lies lies.

Raw milk, um, this could just we'll be option. I need to source RAW yoghurt with no additives to cause allergy.
Seriously not going to put up with this.

So interest are so, eclectic or require attributes, the general population does not have, My special interest is physics ,
short of attending university lectures, not a lot of like minded Attended a lecture once, Leonard Susskind, introducing his hypothesis on hologram principle on black holes event horizon, Looking around, room full of Apies, however did not know at the time I was one of them. Should have milled around made some friends. I was there with my buddy he worked at the university.

I have already been seeing things pop up on the internet, generated by AI regarding the speculation about Acetaminophen and Autism. The claim is that the fetal liver will be overwhelmed and produce toxic metabolites such as N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine (NAPQI) which will interfere with neurological development. This is pure speculation and is not borne out by toxicology studies. While mitochondria in the brain can create NAPQI there first has to be depletion of glutathione which can be directly measured along with NAPQI which binds to mitochondrial proteins damaging them. Studies demonstrate that even with hepatotoxic levels of Acetaminophen, no NAPQI is detected in the brain [Toxicol Sci . 2025 Jun 1;205(2):274-278] The fetus would die of liver failure well before neurological involvement.

Another example of AI generating damaging misinformation which only serves to inflame confirmation bias in people with no training and experience in the requisite sciences. [My training in metabolism, besides biochemistry, was done in a class by H. Edwin Umbarger who elucidated end product inhibition - our final exam was to do a mass balance of E. coli metabolism given 60 g of glucose.]

Furthermore, is this sodium-channel blocker specific to the brain, or is it relatively non-specific? If it is the later, then consider that sodium channels are found in nearly all of our tissues. Do we not expect some horrible side effects?
If it was not somehow limited to brains, even if I wanted to take it (would not) I would suffer - maybe i would die..?.

I am the only person I have ever met whose doctor has said (more than once - reminded) "You need to eat more salt".

I don't avoid salt. As far as anyone knows from tests nothing is wrong with my kidneys or anything.

But if I dont actually make an effort to consume enough salt I get orthostatic hypotension (the thing where you pass out or get dizzy and fall over and vision turns to static and cuts out just before you pass out, whenever you stand up from sitting or lying down...

first time doctor said "try eating more salt" because this is an easy thing to try before doing lots of expensive testing to a person whose life feels like unending medical investigstion alreadly from immune things, just to search for a problem beyond mild sodium deficiency with no clear nor likely disease association)

Quote below is from article, emphasis is mine:
Disorders from the autism spectrum (ASD, autism spectrum disorders) are not only manifested by impairments in [...] interest formation [...]

Anyone who phrases the autistic tendency
towards single-minded intense interest as
an impairment [the end] automatically loses a significant measure of respect from me.

"Special interests" (and moreso the related issues with cognitive set-shifting and overall regulstion of attention) can be impairing but they can also be a strength. All depends on context as well as subjective values.

Eating more salt, ironically leads to more fluid retention...and may result in serum levels of sodium...due to dilution...to not rise.

AI Overview

Chronic hyponatremia is often caused by medical conditions that lead to increased water retention, such as heart failure, kidney disease, or liver cirrhosis, or by medications like diuretics. Other causes include hormonal imbalances, especially Syndrome of Inappropriate ADH secretion (SIADH), and conditions leading to fluid and electrolyte losses, such as chronic vomiting or diarrhea.

Medical Conditions
  • Kidney Disease: Kidneys unable to excrete excess fluid, leading to water retention.

  • Heart Failure: An excess of fluid builds up in the body.

  • Liver Cirrhosis: The liver can't properly regulate fluids, causing water retention.

  • Syndrome of Inappropriate ADH (SIADH): The pituitary gland releases too much antidiuretic hormone (ADH), which makes the body retain water.

  • Hormonal Imbalances: This can be related to conditions like hypothyroidism or adrenal insufficiency.
Medications
  • Diuretics ("water pills"): These medications can increase the excretion of sodium.

  • Antidepressants and Pain Medications: Some of these can cause increased urination or sweating.

  • Other Drugs: Carbamazepine, vincristine, and certain antipsychotics can contribute to hyponatremia.
Fluid/Water Balance Issues
  • Drinking Too Much Water:
Overwhelming the kidneys' ability to excrete water, seen in conditions like psychogenic polydipsia.

  • Excessive Fluid Loss:
Chronic vomiting, diarrhea, or severe burns can lead to sodium and water loss, and if fluid intake consists of non-sodium-containing fluids, hyponatremia can result.
Other Causes
  • Excessive Alcohol Consumption: Alcohol can interfere with the body's fluid balance.

  • Illicit Drugs: Ecstasy (MDMA) can lead to excessive water intake and increased vasopressin secretion.

  • Reset Osmosat Syndrome: In certain chronic, debilitating conditions, the body's osmoreceptors are reset to a lower threshold for ADH release, resulting in a stable but low sodium level.
I don't know you or your medical condition, but I've never heard of a physician recommending consumption of more salt. What I might suggest, if you do use salt, is to avoid the more common, processed NaCl with that of sea salt, which has higher concentrations of calcium and other micronutrients.

I know many of us do not want to get fixed this crap drives me nuts. Untrained people many well meaning can be dangerous to us.
They seem to confuse a desire to reduce some of the negative effects with a desire to change our being.

It's kinda like trying to cure violence by altering people to be more like sheep.
