... when your child was young, you used the intro to Guns N Roses' song, "Mister Brownstone" as a cheerful, wholesome wake up and get ready song.

"I get up around seven
Get out of bed around nine
Get on the bus about eleven
Sippin' a drink and feelin fine."

(Mind you- the drink was a juice box)

How about you? What parts of your childhood pop culture influenced your parenting? It can be lighthearted or serious.

Another one would be, that I was left to my own devices, even more than most Gen X kids, and was exposed to and experienced a whole lot of really really grown up bad stuff, way too freaking young.

So, although far from a perfect mom, I tried my best to shield my child from that kind of stuff, and also to find her wholesome, fun activities, like scouts, youth group, volunteering, summer/winter camp, etc, so she could find lasting friendships and learn from positive, caring adults.

Not parent, but my parents influenced me a lot with 80s alt rock.

Some of it had to do with no real internet. But my daughter and I did all sorts of things outside. Camping, fishing, sledding, playing and hiking in the woods, riding bikes, zoo, junkyard, helping me with things like firewood, fixing cars. And had plenty of things to do inside too, which required her own thoughts and creativity. Like art, music, legos. Running a VCR and the old C Band dish. She learned to be smart and self sufficient, and at 24 has done well. She lives and works near the big city but loves to come up north to vacation.

And listening to my music choices too. Which she liked a lot of. I found her a Sting song for a school project of hers once.

...you still have Casey Kasem's voice in your head, and it's followed by at least one of each, Duran Duran, Styx and Fleetwood Mac songs that will never...ever...quit haunting you.

From an older perspective, my kids were born in the 90s, I was in my late 30s. I used to sing/scat Miles Davis and Charlie Parker tunes to them as babies. They grew up to be pretty fine musicians, loving all styles of music, especially The Beatles. "H-h-hey Ringo!"
