Issues with water.

It's something I've been wondering about, and a thing many people have given me weird looks over and I was wondering if there might be more aspies that have this (because I'm curious if it's a thing that can be linked to sensory problems or something)

Ever since I can remember, I can't stand the feeling of being wet. I'm not scared of water or swimming or so, but I hate swimming and showers are hell to me. The feeling of water just freaks me out and I want to dry myself ASAP to the point that I even try to skip showers sometimes when I don't feel well (my mom usually forces me to) and not having set a foot in any body of water for the past 5 years.

Another amazing quirk is how, if I'm at a beach, I usually just keep all my clothes and shoes on and just read a book, don't want any sand between my toes or anything :/. I still can't figure out why I don't want to wear short pants at all, only long jeans really (I don't mind taking off my shirt but usually just don't).

So just wondering if these are things that sound familiar to others or if I'm the only one that has this.

I'm the opposite, I love water. Soaking in a bath is a guilty pleasure, whilst showering is akin to 'rushing it'.

Mind you, I'm not a beach person so you'll never find me stripped off and lounging in the sun.

My motorcycle riding buddies call me the rainman :D

I would often hear "Oh chit, there he is again,it's going to rain"

My reply to that is "you can only get so wet" :p

I once live about 15 minutes from the ocean and only went to the beach when out of town visitors requested to go there. ;)

That's the weird thing, I don't mind rain on the bike either, probably because weatherproof gear or something. I'm more worried about grip.

(I ride all year, all weather as long as it's not snow or ice)

Second season riders are the toughest on the street in my opinion ;)
What is raingear besides a good leather? :D

My summer gear is leather jacket and Kevlar pants but for the winter I have a water proof cloth Macna jacket+pants. Those keep the warmth in way better if you ask me

The cold never bothers me that much except for my hands and eyes,so I wear gloves and goggles and maybe thermal pants in the winter.

I love water, showers, taking long baths is just soooo relaxing, and I like swimming (but not lying on the beach). I like being near a body of water - sea, river or lake. It's relaxing and calming.

I really enjoy being around it as well, the sounds and looks are great. I just don't want to be in it

For me it depends on the water. Natural water is usually fine but, softened water feels slimy or slippery on my skin and I hate it. I had to deal with it in college and, usually took a bath in the river rather than using the water in my apartment because I hated the feel of the softened water.

I love swimming and long baths so long as the water is not too soft, hard water is definitely better to me.

I have a well now and, the water is so hard it leaves a mineral crust on everything it touches in just a few days. it can be a cleaning hassle but, I'd rather that than soft, slimy water.

Most of us have some kind of sensory issues , some more than others. It sounds to me like just another sensory issue, there for typical for a Aspie. Keep your showers short and you got it made.

I'm nearly the same way, but with a very strong preference for the ocean. Not sure why, but at some point I developed a principled dislike of pools, rivers, and reservoirs (there are no natural lakes in my vicinity, so anything the locals call a lake is actually a reservoir created by damming the river). I've always explained my dislike of local natural bodies of water as wanting to avoid pollution, and there is one stream where I might still be willing to go swimming if I could avoid the people who frequent it just because it is so clean. Pools, now. Dunno. I just really hate them.

But the ocean is always perfect. Rain or shine, don't really care. I'll even get wet if it's too cold, although I'll most likely get out again because aaaaaaaaaaahh it's too cold.

Swimming pools (I assume this is what you mean?) smell of chlorine, and that can be unpleasant.

I do get you up to a point about water, but for me it is a matter of hating water on my face. I do not mind washing my face, but really it does take courage to be under the shower and I am always eager to get dry again.

Swimming is a complete no no for me, even though, I can't swim, I feel freaked out at just seeing an immense landscape of water in front.

As for the beach; noooooo way! Not a beach lover at all, but if I were dragged to the beach, I would just sit down reading!

I don't like it when I first get into the shower, particularly if it's chilly (water makes me even colder initially), but once I've become acclimatised to the water, it's fine. Once I'm in the shower, I'm happy to stay there a while. It would be even better if I had a decent shower.

Sometimes a shower head will put out water with too much pressure, and I feel that it hurts. Otherwise, unless I'm just really sensitive on a particular day (which I have been more sensitive recently), I'm okay with showers. Swimming...I try to avoid that. Chlorinated water (i.e., swimming pools) make me feel pretty bad (chest tightness, etc.) which I've been told could be a sensitivity to the chlorination. I don't like the way that salt water feels, so I try to avoid swimming in the ocean. I also don't like the idea of swimming with unknown creatures, which makes me avoid swimming in the ocean even more, along with avoiding lakes and rivers as well. If it's a lake or stream/river, I am okay to put my feet in (such as when sitting on a dock), but that is all! Otherwise I just can't stand it! I absolutely hate the feel of rain. The way it lightly touches my skin and runs down makes my skin crawl all over. I completely feel your disdain for water, RidingDutchman !

I hate city water, it makes me feel really slimy and dirty. Poisoned if it's been freshly treated. I prefer ground water. The harder the water, the cleaner I feel.

Water in general doesn't bother me. Being sticky does. I turn into a raccoon when I'm around jelly, I constantly wash my hands.

That sounds familiar as well, I can't stand dirt or stickiness on my hands. I probably just dislike "foreign" materials touching me

I also can't stand anything "foreign" on my hands. They must be clean and they must be dry. I went snowboarding for the first time last winter, without waterproof gloves, and my dad said he knew which person I was coming down the mountain eveytime. I would fall, get onto my knees, and shake my hands repeatedly to get the excess snow off and to try and keep my hands dry. I used to scream as a kid when I would fall in the dirt or gravel and my hands would get dirty. That was my only concern. If I had bleeding knees it didn't matter; I only cared about my dirty hands.
