is having difficulty starting conversations and keeping them alive part of A.S.?

I'm trying harder to communicate with other people. I admire neurotypical people for never running out of things to say and knowing just the right to say it. I know I'll get there one day, I just have to be patient. When I use the phone, I prefer texting over calling, because it's unlikely that I can hold a quality one hour conversation. My mom can talk for a long time to other people.

i hate small talk

I don't think it has anything to do with AS or NT. Having a good conversation depends on who you are talking to, how long you've known them, how much you have in common, how open each person is to converse on certain topics, knowing things about a lot of different subjects, and the willingness for each individual to "want" to talk to others, etc. Good conversation is give and take from both or all parties. Shyness and inexperience in conversing with others may play a part, but that can be improved with practice. I have found that other people are also scared to be the first to say anything and actually welcome it when I'm the first to start a conversation. I find a problem talking with younger people (teens and 20's) because I believe the reason to be that they have been brought up with texting and don't know how to actually talk to people, which is sad.

I agree with the last part Nurseangela, in that the young people do not know how to talk to others, with texting and emails. I also think may have some thing to do with a persons thought process. these days phones are not used much for talking now.

Things are about to come full circle for us Aspies. The art of conversation is dying all over. You only have to go to a restaurant, to see it for yourself. The couple that sits on their smart phones, rather than talk to each other. As the convenience of doing everything from a pc or a phone grows, so does the ability for the world to socialize

I'm great at environmentally stimulated conversations. Eg discussing funny customers we've had at work today, but just general chit chat no way!!! My friends are all good and I just sort of sit and nod along. The other thing I'm good with is specific topics I can tell you all day about something that you say talk about... And I'm fine just not at changing the topic and coming up with new things to say.
