Good Bye Shelley Duvall

You know, that one lady we met that one time.

I always loved her. She seemed like a sweet lady, and very unique. So very relatable. Girl next door vibe. She clearly was neurodivergent. She seemed so innocent and wholesome. Heart on sleeve.

Hollywood really did her dirty. And from what I read, Stanley Kubrick and Jack Nicholson were barbarically torturous to her on the set of The Shining, resulting in PTSD. It sickens me to see what they let happen to her, psychologically and emotionally, because they liked the way she cried.

Poor darling. I always did love her. 80s kids, do you remember Faerie Tale Theatre? It was played almost religiously in my home as a child.

Sad, but true. Stanley Kubrick deliberately kept her on edge the whole time they filmed "The Shining". All to keep her rigidly within character.

Method acting as a choice is one thing, but method directing where one is kept in character 24/7 against their own will? That's going to far. Kubrick was a great director, but no one should be subjected to such treatment. Though it wouldn't surprise me if these days most actors secure contractual terms to prohibit such treatment.

RIP Shelley. Maybe your case actually did some good as a precedent.

So sad!

I will always remember her in Brewster McCloud, and, later, with my kids watching Fairytale Theater.

She did seem warm, caring and friendly. For Fairy Tale Theater it was like your favorite loveable Aunt visiting and telling you a story at bedtime etfc. . I've only seen two episodes of Fairy Tale Theater and not much else. At least she's at peace now. Kinda reminds me of Levar Burton with doing the fairy tale theater episodes.
