Anyone else not actually feel hungry until their stomach is audibly growling? Cause that's the way it's always been with me. Apparently a lot of people can figure they're hungry before the physical parts of hunger come into play.

Weird, it's probably why I eat at such weird times a lot of days.
 
I don't really feel hunger, ever.

I have problems with Interoception. I did hundreds of hours with an Occupational Therapist to recognise the feeling of hunger, and to differentiate tastes like sweet vs sour or salty.

Previous to that, I thought hunger felt like a headache.

I don't ever feel full either.
 
Sometimes I don't know that I'm hungry until the message gets through and it suddenly hits me. Then, I'm very hungry. Often a sign that I'm hungry before I feel hungry is irritability.
 
When you're hungry, eat. If you're not, then don't. This is most likely the way we need to eat, as opposed to "clock watching", eating out of habit, "Well, I might as well eat something now." situation, or worse, eating to satisfy a depressive mood.

Getting away from that breakfast, lunch, dinner habit is a better way to go. Skipping a meal at some point during the day, is no problem, in fact, may have health benefits.

I only eat 1 or 2 meals a day.

Yeah, I have to remember to eat, otherwise I eat once or twice a day and feel weak, that's how I know I need food.

This is very true for me, I'm someone who is prone to getting fat and if I try to follow that old regime I get pretty big very quickly. I normally only have one meal a day, in the evening.

I do get hungry when my body needs it, if I'm regularly doing physical work my stomach lets me know very clearly that it needs more. If I'm just sitting around all day, which I do a lot, I often don't get hungry and some days I forget to eat. I'm still very definitely not underweight.

I forget to drink quite often though. I don't notice I'm thirsty until signs start to become obvious.
 
I don't eat really unless I feel hungry. My girlfriend finds it quite odd, but that's just the way I eat.

I have medication induced weight gain, which is slowly but surely resolving thankfully.

Sometimes I don't feel hungry, but very definitely should eat. I think this is partially the cause of the ocular migraines I get. If I get low blood sugar they can come pretty much without warning.

The irritating part is that medical professionals won't believe that I only eat of I'm feeling hungry. They see someone who has gained weight and think "Oh you must sit about all day eating burgers and fries with a six pack of Foster's while laughing maniacally." Then also criticising me for not really eating at set times :rolleyes:

My metabolism slowed right down as I got older too. Unless I'm doing physical work all the time I generally live on less than 1000 calories a day and still have trouble with weight.

I think I'm very much the same. Before I began to experience so much joint pain, I'd be busy doing all kinds of things. There were rarely enough hours in the day. So I think just the amount of activity kept my weight low. Once that stopped, the full effects of the meds became apparent in my weight :(
 
Yes, and if you are a nite time person, that really is bad. I can eat 4pm. Then swing to 8pm. For a second meal.
 
I eat once a day 11: AM, due to difficulty walking not getting much exercise other weights first thing in morning and a walk-in afternoon 2km.
 
I feel hungry almost all the time. My problem comes when I try to actually eat the food. Eating is not a very pleasant sensory experience for me.
 
No never experienced that. Must be very strange. Always had a healthy appetite. I think it might be curable though. Just get an Italian Mom. Yes, that would do it I think.

There sure is a lot of diversity in people's food habits. I need to eat three or four small meals a day, on a regular basis, or I will get weak, irritable, have impaired ability to focus, have low blood sugar, get a headache, and tend to overeat later in the day or night to compensate for what my body must think is starvation.

I've never been overweight in my life and my BMI is 24. But I do get fairly regular exercise, rarely eat sugar, avoid unhealthy fats, never drink soft drinks, don't like coffee, drink a lot of water, avoid junk food and empty calories, and eat a diverse range of whole, unprocessed foods and plenty of fiber. I feel at my best when I consistently eat like that.
 
As someone who has known true hunger as a child and adult, to the point where there was nothing in the house but baking powder and bay leaves, to where I had to learn herbalism, just so I could find edible weeds and not starve, I never could understand people who aren't hungry most of the time.

It's true, I do forget to eat, especially breakfast and lunch. But that does not mean I am not hungry!! I am always ready for a snacky. Like if you show up with cheesecake, french fries, a chicken cesar salad, um cookies, chips, or a full barbecue brisquet dinner, I am down to chow.

And don't even get me started on the Asian American Wonders that are Sushi Burritos, Spam Musubi, or Bubble Waffles.

I have a huge oral fixation. I love the flavors and textures of food. I like the happy way it makes my tummy feel. I like how it raises my blood sugar to a normal level.

Food is how I show love to others as well. Even if I'm nearly out of food, I like to make sure everyone who walks through my door leaves with a full belly. It's essential.

Not eating? Not liking eating? It's not just as different as Mars and Venus. It's like a whole other galaxy.

Bring me the goodies, n I'll share em with y'all.

And until then- just make yourself comfy on the couch, I'll be in the kitchen finishing up our lunch. I hope you brought your appetite.

I used to get hungry for a very specific thing and if I did not have it I felt sick.
And that is the way it was.
I can overeat I think.
But I like eating healthy.
And if I eat too much junk I feel like rubbish.
So yes....
