Does anyone else have a phobia?

Mine is learning to drive. Not sure I ever will, which will restrict where I can work in the end. In fact I'm scared of working too. Are phobias part of Asperger or can be?
 
I seriously hope that you can find a way to get over your fears that will hold you back :)

People ie social phobia, especially strangers; I go into surreal mode when I have to meet someone for the first time.

I thought I would have a phobia about driving too or more precise: being on the road but actually, it is quite the opposite! I love driving and one area in my life that I do not care what others think of me. I got beeped and looked at because of my inexperience at driving and I really didn't care, because I was more concerned with safety.

Sadly, I cannot get a license because I live in a different country and they do not do it in my language, but I have the chance of driving what they call: voiture sans permis, which means I can drive but at a limited speed and do not need a license because of this.

I thought it was no hope for me, because of how expensive they are, but a friend (hehe do have a couple now) suggested: boncoin and sure enough, they have them for sale, at a really good price!

Yes, social phobia, which encumbrances my entire "world"!
 
i would imagine most if not everybody here has some level of social phobia

in the specific case of driving..... well, right now i'm waiting for dad to wake up so him, his girlfriend and myself can go take a mini vacation for a night. it's about a 1hr drive and she can't drive at night and doesn't like driving long distance so i'm basically going to drive them. although i have a license i hate driving. i can drive fine when i'm alone in the car and traffic is minimal, but we need to go through boston........ traffic is never minimal at any time of day. not to mention my father is a good part of the reason as to why i believe everybody is judging everything i do (in short, because he did when i was a kid). otherwise.. i sold the car i did have because i didn't use it enough. my cousin was always taking my car, but i was the one paying for it.. so there was no reason for me to keep it. eventually i would like to get a car again but i hate just being outside here most of the time because it's always so crowded
 
I have arachnophobia and despite overcoming all my other fears, this one stays. It has lessened over the years but the bigger spiders still freak me out.
 
I don't mind spiders, but wasps are freaking terrifying monsters.

I used to hate flies--I wasn't afraid of them, I just didn't like them. I think because of the buzzing sound they made. But now that I've started composting, well, I wouldn't say that I've made peace with them. It's more of a temporary armistice that lasts as long as the weather is warm.
 
My phobia was food poisoning for so long! probably 5 years or so well maybe thats not that long but it felt so long and it was horrible

Oh I HATE flies so much, but as you say, I am also not afraid of them! It was all due to watching a film once and seeing what they do and when I got this confirmed, that was it, I turned into a nightmare when they are around. Even if one just brushed a piece of food, that is it, that food is no longer edible to me! I also learned that flowers love them, because they are the best pollinators and thus, flowers and I are enemies lol ( not really)
 
I only passed my driving test this year at 32.. I never thought I'd do it but somehow it happened. It's something that worried me for so long yet suddenly I just went for it and it took from November to January to do lessons, theory and test. I think it helps that when something worries me I can't take my mind off it.. I dreamt about myself driving and wrote down what to do and watched videos of manoeuvres.. and then it was all done. I'm still quite frightened but I drive a lot.
I hate lifts and any small places. I am better in lifts with others but hate being on my own. I hate spiders and wasps and snakes..
I am not keen on heights.
I hate being in public loos and having to lock the door, mainly if there is no gap around the cubicle. Hehe I am now seeing the weirdness in me.
I hate answering doors and phones.
I hate having to be sociable....
Marvellous.. nice hot drink and a puzzle and I'm happy.. ;-D
 
Acrophobia and claustrophobia are very strong in me. I refuse to climb latters and I get scared even using a stepladder.
 
It took me forever to learn to drive, but that wasn't because I was scared: just braindead and overwhelmed every lesson. I learned in a manual, which requires a lot more coordination than an automatic. It wasn't a fun process, but I got there eventually. Key word being "eventually". I enjoy driving now, though.

Anyway, my only phobia is arachnophobia but it's a piss-annoying one: I can't stand the patronising comments from people when they see that you're scared of spiders ("It won't hurt you, you know. There aren't any poisonous spiders in the UK". Me thinking: "Yes, I ****ing know that there aren't any poisonous spiders in the country I've lived in all my life, you cretin".) Phobias by their nature are irrational: there is no rational reason for me to be scared of house spiders, but I can't bear the sight of them, unless they're very small (smaller than my thumbnail, legs included) or very spindly, like money spiders. The larger and blacker they are, the more I wish death on all spiders.

Incidentally I'm fine with all other insects, reptiles, mammals, etc.

Somebody mentioned food poisoning earlier. Yeah, I'm scared of that now, but in my case I think that's a rational fear tbh.

Oh I hate them so much, I act like a crazy person trying to kill them if there in the house.

Also other people's germs can't stand the idea of them. To me unbearable is having to shower in someone else's shower.
 
I am not sure if phobias are related to Aspergers, but do suspect they are related to Anxiety, which many of us have as a co-morbid. What the total connection is though ? Idk

But yes, I am prone to them, can see how some have developed after some incident. I have also seen they can be overcome to a large degree by a program of acclimation and/or medication.

Here are some I have had, and their current condition:

Heights - Stabilized
Bees - Overcome
Flying - Stabilized
Lightning - Overcome
Tornados - Active
Floods - Overcome
Snakes - Overcome
