Do you react to swimming pool chemicals?

Full Steam

I've had this since I can remember, and it's maybe got worse.

I went in the pool for maybe 2 hours yesterday and I was fine while I was in, but within 10 minutes of getting out my energy tanks, and I become unable to think clearly.

That continues at least until the next day and slowly wears off like a hang over.

These things help a little;

  • Covered with coconut oil before swimming.
  • Shower before and after swimming.
  • Glutathione
  • Coffee
  • Peppermint tea.

These things may or may not help;

  • Vit C sprays.
  • Charcoal tablets before bed.
  • Taurine before & after.

Is this a common autism thing, or something else?

I have not been in a public pool since I was a kid. The chemicals are so strong that is all I can smell for a couple of days. Private pools are a little better since they do not have to mix the chemicals so strong, but I still do not like them. I like lakes and rivers, just fresh water. Munch more refreshing and enjoyable.

This was a private, salt water pool with a chlorinator.

The low land rivers, seas and lakes around here are full of Bull Sharks. No way I'm swimming in there.

Steam, I am very glad I met you here because you have very similar troubles with heinous sensory issues! I cannot even go into the pool area in the gym. I could never swim in a public pool.

A lady was in the sauna yesterday full blast and had ALL her swim wear in there drying out. It was full of chlorine and steaming out.

I was OK for a bout 3 minutes and then all dizzy. ANd, like yu said, when I beat it out of there, it was on me all the way to the car, in the car, etc.

Turmeric really helps and cilantro. Also green drinks and water, tons of water and also mega vit c, like 1,000 mg every couple hours.

I used to be able to take more herbs and supplements but then I got sensitized.

Do you think you have MCS? I have it.

Yes I definitely have MCS - my daughter has almost identical MCS and is probably Aspie. The swimming pool hit her hard and we've had melt downs and high emotions from her).

Funnily enough, my Ancestry DNA results came back today and I ran them though checker.

I have this (amongst others)
rs1801394 - MTRR A66G (Risk Allele: G)
Necessary to regenerate Methyl-B12 for use by MTR. Mutation can cause shortage, suggesting a need for more B12.

I am GG so I have two faulty copies.

I was still feeling awful today, so I just dumped a load of B12 - like about 2000mcg, (much more than my usual c700mcg).

Within about 30 minutes most of the yuck has dropped off, and I can work again.

I was considering turmeric and cilantro since you last mentioned them - I'll get some ordered.

I should buy shares in iHerb!

:D

That's very interesting.

I've noticed that it mostly happens AFTER I get out not so much in the pool. That made me think it must be ammonia from the chlorine attaching to ammonia is the skin and forming Chloramine.

But, I think I can remember the same thing happening as you describe - showers washed in bleach, leisure centres the same.

That would mean it was gas through respiration not liquid through the skin.

Maybe it is Chloramine gas, so not much affect during swimming outside as it's mostly just chlorine gas which gets blown away, but once out the pool and inside chlorine reacts with skins amines and forms chloramine (as in your sauna drying clothes), and the skin vents the gas inside the house causing symptoms.

That may be wrong, but at least it's a new theory :)

I'll take lakes and rivers over a pool any day, that is, if it's warm enough, though. The problem for me is, it's still winter and I have no choice but to use a pool if I want to keep swimming.
