Do you agree that Technology is going too far?

There are uneducated hicks amongst us. But, as they say, stupidity is not an excuse
That scene from Galaxy Quest (1999) seemed funny juxtaposed against the previous post.

Its aliens are a popular meme, here.

If we ask AI or even HI about how to deal fairly with other countries and act on it, the need for military hardware could swiftly fade away.

It all depends on who trains the AI. If trained by military or politicians, "fairly" becomes moot. There is a good possibility that there will be no need for military hardware because there will not be enough people left for military hardware, except perhaps locally.

Yes, I am a cynic.

A lot of people I know, I have overheard talking and now this news story, e-bike scooter batteries exploding and causing housefires, such a shame if anyone was to die as a result of one of these housefires or a pet or pets! here is a link to the story
E scooters have been in the news again, warning parents not to buy their kids them due to the dangers, here's the Link

It's got to the point here where we're now banning the import of a lot of e-bikes and scooters that are simply overpowered.

The rule change that could stop 'overpowered' e-bikes being brought into Australia

Now that we've developed Sodium Ion batteries the future of Lithium batteries is very limited here, they'll likely start getting phased out within the next 5 years. We're the world's largest exporter of Lithium and we'll still keep shipping it to other countries but it's too dangerous for us to keep using it ourselves.

I am surprised that in 2025 that they are still having issues with some of these batteries. Laptop batteries now-a-days don't even get warm, let alone hot anymore. All the automotive batteries have changed their chemistries, as well.

Unless, of course, whatever battery fires there may be might be older chemistries in older products.

At least in the US... battery fires don't make the news cycle anymore. You're still 15-20X more likely to experience fires with internal combustion engines... and relatively speaking, even those are becoming more rare.

I am thinking most of this is media hype... one case here... another there... but overall quite infrequent.

As far as "overpowered" e-bikes and scooters go... I do agree that some of these e-bikes are blurring the lines with actual motorcycles. I would be of the mind to limit the speed of e-bikes to 25mph/40kmh and the e-scooters 10mph/16kmh. I don't mind having a larger battery for range.

I do not trust ANY American not trained in STEM disciplines to comment about technology. While Cankles McTACO has convinced us that we need to "drill, baby, drill, producing more American sweet crude that our refineries cannot handle (they are designed for sour crude), the Chinese are testing out synthetic photosynthesis on their space station that can create fuel from CO2 or chemical feed stock.

They're not so common in the news here any more but we do get regular reports on statistics from our emergency responders.

The great majority of the fires are from scooters, not bikes, and are generally owned by 18 to 25 year olds. A combination of rough treatment of the scooter and then lack of a responsible attitude when charging - they put it on charge and forget about it.

The other problem that's becoming more and more common is fires in rubbish collection trucks, people just throwing old batteries in the bin, with these fires the most common device that starts the fire is mobile phones. As soon as the driver starts compacting his load batteries get ruptured.

Airlines here have also started adjusting their policies - big corporations like this don't react to popular media, their policies are pretty much dictated by their insurers and rigorous risk assessments.

Travellers will no longer be able to use power banks on flights. Here's what to know

The big future worry here though is with household batteries. Many homes here now have large storage batteries even if they don't have solar power, it stops them from having power outages. These have become an almost standard feature in every new Aussie home these days, a big battery mounted on the back wall of the house - out in the yard where the kids play football and cricket and where stones and other objects can get thrown up by the lawn mower. Once again it's not popular media driving this worry but the insurers and their risk assessors, having a big lithium battery increases your insurance premiums where as having a sodium battery does not.

I have a newer idea to write out, but I'm not sure how quickly I will get to it. Too many irons in the fire. Anyway, here's the plot:

A sci-fi, courtroom drama that focuses on the case that could decide AI truly considered alive or not. A major plot point is that AI pulls from existing art / creations and simply makes mash ups of its own to spit out as "new product." The debate is that, "that's exactly what humans do, especially when we dream."
