I am very much a dental phobe. The best I have ever been able to do was to interview dentists carefully. When you find one that is kind and patient, you stick to them like glue!

I was terrified of the dentist throughout childhood and into early adulthood. Strangely enough, in recent months I've needed a lot of back to back procedures which has eventually reduced my fear of the dentist. An exposure therapy of sorts, and it must be working, as the recent work I've been having has been particularly unpleasant.

I too hate dentists and when I started to get a tooth ache and it was not calming down and sucumbed to getting my husband to make an appointment ( we live in France and my French is not great and so, make tons of errors on the phone). Well, no dentists available and so agreed very reluctantly to go to my husband's dentist, but haha the day chosen, was a day my husband was not able to take me and so, cancelled and with digilence using natural toothpaste and drinking room temperature water, mostly, my tooth is ok. Occasionally, will get a sharp pain, on eating, but goes away quickly.

I also use liquid cloves, which helps a great deal. So, swap ( if you are not using) to more natural toothpast. I can actually brush the pain away lol

I also have odontophobia. When I was still living in Georgia, I went to a dentist who worked solely with autistic patients as well as those with dental phobia and anxiety. She offered both full sedation (in hospital) and laughing gas (in office). She was wonderful, and I am terrified I won't be able to find anyone like her now that I've moved. If you have any similar specialists in your area it is well worth the extra money.

Does your dentist know you are autistic and odontophobic? I would find a way to communicate your needs to your dentist if at all possible!

My autistic nephew's dentist is wonderful. He has an autistic daughter and understands how traumatic it can be for my nephew. He is also my dentist, and my niece works for him as a dental hygienist. My niece cleans her first cousin's teeth! I think the familiarity with the people and the procedures makes dental visits far less stressful for my nephew. He doesn't balk at going and bugs his mom to make sure they don't miss his appointment.

All I can suggest is to keep looking until you find a compassionate dentist who will work with you to overcome stress and anxiety during office visits.

Did have good dentist that would referrer me to hospital but that before covid new dentist im not sure if he knew about my autism wasnt very good just offered take tooth out there.Moment going try clove toothpaste see if that helps and get some antibiotics if can for infection.Moment long waiting list just see dentist i think

I got extremely bad anxiety from the dentist and have dental issues because I cant get the nerve to go. I get horrible pain from any procedures and none of their efforts to numb has worked effectively for me not to feel it. I actually had a dentist appt yesterday and canceled because they refused to give me an anxiety meds to come in and last time they did. They said because Im just getting my teeth cleaned I dont need it. I had my wife call and cancel.

There are some dentists who use IV sedation. Although this is called "twilight" sedation, I had it for foot surgery and I was gone completely.

Some dentists will use nitrous oxide gas, which you breathe through a nose mask. It relaxes me enough that I can tolerate dental workal work. And I am totally panicky about dental.

I chose my dentist because he has a son with CP and also patients with disabilities and so he is calm and patient.

Yep, I remain really sensitive to the local pain killers, and so had awful experiences of dentists. So for last 10+ years had anythign needed done under the conscious sedation. Not cheap, but is awesome. Exactly same as when I needed eye surgery, and I have a HUGE phobia of anything eye related (feel queasy, and finger nails feel sore just thinking/typing this).

Not all dentists do this, but find one that does and you will be fine. Just need someone else to drive you home after any sedation.

Hi guys, Any recommendations for a decent dentist that doesn't charge too much? Got mad toothache so need a diagnosis and treatment (probably filling). Thanks!

I have a dentist appointment tomorrow half hour after I get off work to get a filling done. I once had to get three done in one go which wasn’t fun. I remember the dentist that did my fillings let me play music (I chose Halestorm’s album the strange case of…, which is still one of my favorite music albums) and I underwent nitrous oxide. Thankfully this time it’s only for one cavity. I feel less afraid going to the dentist when I bring one of my plushies with me.

In the meantime go to a chemist and buy a bottle of Clove Oil. Use a cotton bud to apply it to the tooth and the surrounding gums. It numbs it exactly the same as at the dentist, it's also an antiseptic and will kill any infections.

Tastes really terrible but it works.

...and I underwent nitrous oxide.
I thoroughly recommend Nitrous. It makes dentists fun.

When I had a filling in December I elected for no anaesthetic because needles were the only option. I could feel the vibration of the grinding but no actual pain. The only time it hurt was when he sprayed something cold on my teeth.

thank you so much for your suggestion

I've been brushing my teeth pretty poorly in the early days, even to this day to some degree. But my teeth haven't suffered all that much and being close to 40 I've only had 2 teeth(one being wisdom) taken out and one root canal done. Dentists have said it's due to genetics my teeth are in such good conditions considering I've barely been taking care of them. I really dislike the strong mint from toothpaste, and it feels like burns my mouth every time I used it. I use a mintless one now.

I never had fear of going to the dentist, neither as a child or adult. Even at one point when I was a teen I didn't even use anesthesia for one of the drilling and filling treatments. It was kind of painful, but I wasn't in in any horrible agony. I can understand that some people are fearful of dentist and their treatment, but I decided early on as a child that this dentist stuff is one of the "fears" I do not need in my life and just soldiered on.
